 3. The iPhone has three cool sensors. First, it has an accelerometer that detects when you’ve rotated the iPhone into landscape orientation. In programs like Photos, Safari, and iPod, it triggers the screen image to rotate as well.

Camouflaged behind the black glass where you can’t see them except with a bright flashlight are two more sensors: a proximity sensor that shuts off the screen illumination and touch sensitivity when the phone is against your head (it works only in the Phone application), and an ambient-light sensor that brightens the display when you’re in sunlight and dims it in darker places.

Apple says that it experimented with having the light sensor active all the time, but it was weird to have the screen get brighter and darker all the time. So the sensor now samples the ambient light, and adjusts the brightness; it does this only once—each time you unlock the phone after waking it.

You can use that tip to your advantage. By covering up the sensor (just above the earpiece) as you unlock the phone, you force it to a low-power, dim screen-brightness setting (because the phone believes that it’s in a dark room). Or by holding it up to a light as you wake it, you get full brightness. In both cases, you’ve saved all the taps and navigation it would have taken you to find the manual brightness slider in Settings.

 4. I’m going to share with you the solution to one of the most annoying things, if not THE most annoying thing, about typing on the iPhone:

The punctuation keys and alphabet keys appear in two different keyboard layouts.

So every time you want to type a period or a comma, it’s a three-step, awkward dance: (1) Tap the “.?123” key in the lower left to summon the punctuation layout. (2) Type the period. (3) Type the ABC key in the lower left to return to the alphabet layout.

Imagine how excruciating it is to type, for example, “a P.O. Box in the U.S.A.”! That’s 34 finger taps and 10 mode

The iPhone doesn’t register most key presses until you *release* your finger. I discovered that the Shift and Punctuation keys register their taps on the *press-down* instead.

So here’s what you can do, all in one motion:

    A. Touch the “.?123” key, but don’t lift your finger as the punctuation layout appears.

    B. Slide your finger a half inch onto the period or comma key, and release.

 Incredibly, the ABC layout returns automatically. You’ve typed a period or a comma with one    finger touch instead of three. In fact, you can type ANY of the punctuation symbols the same way.

This makes a HUGE difference in the usability of the keyboard.

     C. The iPod module on the iPhone starts out with buttons along the bottom for summoning   four  lists: Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

But what about Albums? Genres? Composers?

They’re there, all right, but hidden; you have to tap More to see them.

But what if you use those lists more often than Artists or Songs? No problem: you can replace one of those starter buttons with a list of your own.

Tap More, and then tap the Edit button (upper-left corner). You arrive at the Configure screen. Here’s the complete list of music-and-video sorting lists: Albums, Podcasts, Audiobooks, Genres, Composers, Compilations, Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

To replace one of the four starter icons, use a finger to drag an icon from the top half of the screen downward, directly onto the existing icon you want to replace. It lights up to show the success of your drag.

When you release your finger, you’ll see that the new icon has replaced the old one. Tap Done in the upper-right corner.

 6. When sending a text you can just tap the space bar twice at the end of a sentence and will automatically put in a full stop.

 7. Press the home button twice to change/pause the song and adjust the volume. This does work, but it depends on what you have the Home button set to do. Mine goes to favorite contacts when I double click it. It You can be set to go to your Home page, to Favorites, or to iPod.

 8. Jailbreak it and have your mind blown. Then you can: Record videos, use VoIP on edge/3g (or wifi) download from safari so i can find songs on the move and play via dtunes, custom themes, make your own ringtones, software unlock to use other carriers.  9. One of my favorite…. When playing a song in iPod (play/pause volume controls), swipe right on the cover art to return to the track list. Make sure that the options menu (shuffle/repeat controls) isn’t on screen when you do this, otherwise it won’t work.

 10. This is pretty basic, but some people don’t know about it. For websites you visit often, you can place an icon on your home page that links directly to it. Note: FYI: The Facebook app is extremely buggy, so instead of using it I put a link to Facebook Mobile on my home page.

 11. When texting, the words just automatically show up and corrects the word you are writing (this is annoying)!Especially if you dont text in english! To turn automatic texting off; Update your iPhone OS to 2.1 or higher version. Newer OS has an option to turn off the auto-correction, it is located under “Settings > General > Keyboard”

 12. This is probably something obvious for Mac users who use iPhoto ’09 and the iPhone 3G to take photo’s….. but….. each photo you take when you allow the location service adds your geographic location to the image. So when you import these images into iPhoto ’09, it can show you where the photo was taken. It can be a little buggy when taking images indoors as the GPS can’t get a fix.

Note: Windows users, I believe Picasa does something similar.

  13. This was one of the best things about the iphone and I was thrilled to discover it. You can have your banking, o2, paypal etc all as icons on the homepage, it’s great!

Heading to an out-of-town conference? Among the most useful applications of location data on the iPhone is the ability to find nearby friends and coworkers. Although several applications can map your contacts (including Google’s recently launched Latitude), Loopt offers one of the more established networks. The free Loopt lets you share both status and location information with others. For example, when you land at the airport, you can log onto Loopt and let your contacts know you’ve arrived. Since Loopt not only updates within the app itself, but can also export your status updates to Twitter and Facebook, it’s an easy way to announce your location globally. Next you can see who else has arrived, and communicate directly with those people-to find the best way into the city, for example. Once you’re at the conference, you can use Loopt’s Mix feature to find and chat with other nearby attendees about one of the presentations, or just find a partner for lunch.

And if you traveled a little further than you planned and are running low on fuel, GasBag by Jamcode can help you find the best price for gas at nearby filling stations. And if you have to park in unfamiliar turf when you arrive, the free Take Me to My Car, by Eldar Sadikov, will remember when you parked.

Distance Meter Pro lets you track your running time, distance, pace, route, and burned calories.

Because your iPhone 3G knows where you are at any given moment, it can also track your movements-how far you travel and how quickly you move to get there. This lets your iPhone act like a go-anywhere personal trainer, measuring your runs, rides, and hikes. While a slew of apps can track your fitness, the $3 Distance Meter Pro by Future Apps will also count calories for you. Simply enter your weight and activity type, and the app measures how much effort you had to expend to get there at the speed you did. When you’ve finished your run, the app will even export your activity to TrainingPeaks or MapMyFitness, so you can use it in conjunction with your regular training program. One thing to keep in mind when using these apps is that overhead clutter such as trees or storm clouds can interfere with data gathering. That means your iPhone may underestimate your distance, and you may not have a complete map to get back home again.

When you’re wandering a new city-or showing off your own neighborhood to out-of-town guests-your iPhone can offer up interesting details about your surrounding environment. The free Google Earth app, for example, will zoom in on your current location, show you photos from points of interest-so if something you see catches your fancy, you can seek it out-and highlight nearby locations with an associated Wikipedia entry. This is a great way to learn unusual facts about historic buildings and landmarks without having to squeeze onto a crowded tour bus.

Get Truly Local News

If you want breaking headlines from the neighborhood, the free AP Mobile News Network app will fetch news from your current location. However, sometimes events move faster than even the Associated Press can keep up with. If you want to know, for example, where all that smoke is coming from, or why a line is forming outside the building across the street, atebit’s $3 Tweetie lets you filter Twitter posts by location, so you can view all the tweets posted within a 2km radius even if your contacts didn’t write them. During times of crisis-or just at large local events-it can be an invaluable tool for keeping informed.

Some apps try to stand out by adding gimmicks like games or even bikini models, but you’d probably be surprised if we told you that we found an essential NFL app that doesn’t contain a single score or stat. Believe us, we were just as surprised, and even more so to find out how incredibly entertaining this new app actually is. In fact, it has become one of our very favorite sports apps after only a couple days of using it. We are totally hooked, and we’re sure you will be, too.

Realtime Pro Football ‘09 makes a great companion app your sports app arsenal and one you don’t want to pass up. Read on to find out why this app has quickly become one of our favorite sports apps of all time.
 

Realtime Pro Football ‘09 slurps content from Twitter that is generated by people in and around the league. The app taps the Twitter API thousands of times per hour to give you a realtime feed of comments generated by these people. What comes out in the app is a constantly updated stream of commentary that is a lot like any Twitter feed, often interesting, sometimes mundane, but always addictive. The best part about this app is that it doesn’t require you to have a Twitter account or even know anything about Twitter. It takes all the NFL relevant Tweets from Twitter and categorizes them for you.

The app offers four main categories of content to view: All, Teams, Blogs, and Press. The Teams section is where you want to be to follow only the Tweets from a particular team. The Blogs section aggregates content from Fansided.com, a collection of premium content from unofficial team blogs. The Press section contains a feed of Tweets from real sports commentators and journalists who give their professional take on what’s happening in the NFL. Any one of these features could stand on its own, but when you combine them together you get an unparalleled view of the NFL that cannot be found anywhere else. Not ESPN. Not Sport Center. Not any official NFL app. Only Realtime Pro Football ‘09 can give you this crazy cool insight.

It would be nearly impossible to set up your own Twitter account to get this kind of view. You’d have to find all the players, coaches, assistants, media personalities and other NFL personnel who Tweet, then follow them. And forget about grouping them by team in Twitter, that’s almost impossible. Realtime Pro Football ‘09 does all the dirty work for you. Trust us, this is a fantastic NFL app and well worth the $1.99 price in the App Store.

Earlier this week the NFL officially banned Twittering by any player, coach, assistant, or media person (and their extended support groups) during a game. This includes 90 minutes prior to the game and until the post-game media conferences are complete. Last year, you might follow the Tweets from a bored place kicker right on the sideline, but not this year. The interesting aspect about this new rule is that it covers media people as well. Does that include bloggers? What about Twitterers? The NFL cannot stop fans in the stadium from posting Tweets during a game, but it seems they would prefer it that way. The realtime web cannot be stopped, and certainly not by the NFL.

In any case, this new anti-Twitter rule means that you won’t get updates from players during the actual games, but you will hear plenty from them otherwise. Take this morning, for instance, in Realtime Pro Football ‘09 we saw that the Indianapolis Colts had arrived in Cincinnati by bus for tonight’s preseason game against the Bengals. Colt’s defensive end, Raheem Brock, posted the following updates which I read less than a minute after he posted them.

Pretty entertaining stuff (unless you’re a Bengals fan), but then he followed a minute later with this post (apparently after learning how to turn off ALL CAPS):

I live in Cincy, Im a huge Colts fan, Bengals fans are hilarious. Playing them twice a year would be like have 3 bye weeks!

Following all the player smack-talk is a blast. Using this app is like having the players miked up when they’re not playing, giving fans completely new perspective from inside their heads. It’s really terrific for fans of the game, but for the Buffalo Bills, it might not be so good. Terrell Owens has never been one to keep his mouth shut, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can obey the NFL’s new anti-Twitter rule. Our prediction? He’s the first player to get fined for violating this rule.

Whether it’s T.O. or some other player getting slapped by the NFL for spouting off at the wrong time, one thing’s for sure, it’s gonna be fun as heck watching it all play out in realtime with Realtime Pro Football ‘09, one of the best darn football apps for iPhone and iPod touch.

Soosiz – This is the best platforming game that we’ve played on the iPhone. It adopts the usual trappings of a traditional 2d platformer but perfectly mixes in a gravity defying mechanism that turns out to be a lot more than just a cute gimmick. Combine that with great controls and a ton of content, and you have one of our favorite iPhone games. (App Store)

Canabalt – This isn’t a particularly deep game. In fact, the average gaming session is probably measured in seconds rather than minutes. 2XL ATV Offroad – We described this as a “console quality” iPhone racer. The game is technically impressive with beautiful graphics and manages to combine it with varied tracks, a proper career mode and Wi-Fi multiplayer to deliver one of the best racers in the App Store. ( App Store)

Boost 3D – We might not have been too over the top about the game when we first reviewed it, but over time we realized that Boost 3D is a game that we love to play. There’s something hypnotic about this tunnel runner that had us coming back to play it throughout the month. ( App Store)

Get everything you wanted to know about the best-selling 2010 & 2011 Toyota Prius hybrid in the palm of your hand.  Toyota has just launched a mobile phone website for your  iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm, or other mobile phone device and browser.

The new Toyota mobile phone website app is not limited to the Prius, the best-selling hybrid on the planet.  If you want information on the Camry hybrid sedan, it’s there.  Ditto, the Highlander hybrid SUV.  And so is information about all the other Toyota models, from the compact Yaris to the hunky FJ Cruiser.

Right now stability could do with some work – the download queue is getting regularly mentioned as a problem area, as is the way navigating out of the app during video playback is handled – but this could be a really useful program if you’re short on content or at the mercy of poor EDGE speeds.

Yes that’s right, that Apple tablet you and I have been waiting on the past four years will only have to wait just a little bit longer.  If our source is good (and I’m told he or she is) we can all expect an early 2010 delivery of the tablet of our dreams (or so we’ve been hoping).

Engadget have learned from DigiTimes, they have learned that Foxconn have the manufacturing rights for the Apple Tablet PC and that they will release the device in Q1 2010. Foxconn says that they have set an initial shipment of 300,000 to 400,000 per quarter.

This figure seems a little modest, Apple shift around 2.6 million Macs per quarter, which should give an indication to how many Tablet PCs units they will shift. According to DigiTime the iTablet will come with a 10.6-inch touchscreen, which we mentioned above could have the multitouch system.

Apparently, Steve Jobs has been the major hold up with the realization of this device.  That’s both a good thing and a bad thing.  Bad because there are far too many people who wanted to buy this mythical device years ago already, and a good thing because you know Steve only approves the best of the best.  I wouldn’t expect Jobs to allow any but the most amazing tablet device out of the door at Apple, especially with such a long running rumor surrounding said device.

And it seems that Steve is finally happy.  I like it when Steve’s happy, because when Steve’s happy, we’re all happy…with the possible exception of your wallet.  Though the rumored price point is somewhere between a 32GB iPhone and a low end MacBook.  I’m personally guessing around $600 or $700.  I wouldn’t expect the full specs on this thing to be available or even accurate, but you can expect something with a 10 inch screen and supposedly 3G data.  Think of a device that looks like a super sized iPod touch (like the artist’s rendition above).  And I also wouldn’t be surprised to find not an Intel processor, but one of those in-house designed chips we talked about a while back.

Personally, I believe most of this rumor.  Apple would be insane to never release a product that so many consumers want blindly.  I sincerely hope they don’t choose to require a 3G data plan with this device.  There are rumors circulating that it would be offered only through Verizon, effectively requiring many Apple users to have monthly plans with both AT&T and Verizon.  Bad, bad, bad, idea.  How about we just keep it as a regular tablet-like device and we can just find WiFi for it, or buy our own 3G data plans to use with it if we choose. Time will tell, but we’re getting sick of waiting.  Are you?

Ok I’m Sold, What’s the Damage?

When LittleSnapper arrives in the App Store (hopefully in the next week), it will come at a modest price of $2.99. For the rich functionality that you receive, this is quite a bargain. Although there are other photo-capturing apps within the App Store, for shear value, this is the app to get.

I Want More

For an initial offering, LittleSnapper for the iPhone is very impressive. However, I would love to see the ability to sync my captured images over Wi-Fi to the desktop version of LittleSnapper. Currently, I have to share the image to my QuickSnapper account, download the image to my desktop and then add it to my LittleSnapper library.

Maybe I missed this, but on the desktop version of LittleSnapper, you can share images to QuickSnapper, Flickr and an FTP site. With the version for the iPhone, you can only share images to your QuickSnapper account.

Still, these two nits are feature requests and I am sure the folks at Realmac Software are already hard at work on them (and other delightful features) for the next release. Until then, I’ll be pleasantly using LittleSnapper for my photo-taking needs…

Let the games begin.

Some analysts were speculating that the roll out of Google’s Nexus One –unveiled today in Mountain View —  could present something of a headline risk for Apple shares. Global equities research analyst Trip Chowdhry wrote in a note published Monday:

We think, there is a near term headline risk to Apple’s Stock, and it may be prudent for investors with short term horizon to protect their downside risk on Apple. However, investors with long term horizon should be fine, as Apple will be able to catch up with Google over the next 6 months or so, and the final winners in Smart Phone segment will be Google and Apple against less innovative company like RIMM.

But judging from the immediate market reaction, (Indicated on the graph above), Google shares seem to be the ones that have suffered a bit on the announcement of the phone, which costs $529 without a contract and $179 with a two-year T-Mobile contract. Google shares dropped a bit less than three dollars about the same time the press conference began. Granted, that’s not a giant move with a stock trading above $620. Google is down 0.4% on the day. Apple is losing altitude too, but still in positive territory for the day at 0.2%.

KEY DIFFERENCES

Storage capacity and add ons
Both the iPhone and the Nexus One have the same maximum storage capacity of 32GB. The main difference is iPhone storage is built into the phone, with the 3GS available in either 16GB or 32GB whilst the Google phone has variable storage with a microSD slot. The Google smartphone is sold with a 4GB card, which can changed to a maximum of 32 GB. The Google phone also differs as the battery is detachable and replaceable, whereas the iPhone phone battery is built into the device.

Apps
Apple currently boasts some 93,200 applications available for download from the iTunes store.  Ranging from free to paid, an entire spectrum of applications are available, covering social media, outdoor activities, making music, planning meals and activities to games, drawing, media and information services. There are currently 20,000 applications available for the Google phone, which is expected to increase as new apps are developed for the device.

Operating system
One of the key differences lies in the operating systems the two phones use.  The Google Nexus One runs on Android 2.1, open-source software for mobile devices.  Its openness makes it unique and is designed to allow developers to collaborate and innovation to be sped up. With a progressive open-source license it enables operators and manufacturers to design, build and distribute their own products. The iPhone runs exclusively on Apple software which limits the device to official distribution via the App store and iTunes.

Camera
The Google smartphone camera boasts 5 megapixels, autofocus, 2x digital focus and a built in LED flash. In comparison the iPhone camera is 3 megapixels with autofocus. Both phones have video recording capacities but the iPhone has inbuilt video editing abilities.

Voice command
Both phones also include voice command features. The iPhone allows the operator to find a contact or a music stored in the iTunes library. The iPhone 3GS also enables the users to record, store and distribute voice memos. The Google smartphone also has speech command capabilities. It can transfer voice to text and email and can also search via speech.

Multitasking
The Google Nexus One has greater multitasking abilities, making it easy to go between programs and perform multiple activities. In comparison the iPhone is said to be limited to playing music whilst being online or sending a message.

Anyone can record video with an iPhone, but it takes a real Spielberg to make a movie. That’s the idea behind ReelDirector, an app for the iPhone and second-generation iPod touch that attempts to be a full-fledged movie creation tool where you add video clips and photos, and even record an audio snippet, set transitions between scenes, type in the movie credits, and render a final Quicktime movie.

Making “real” movies with ReelDirector is simple and quick, but the $8 tool from Nexvio is a little lacking in deep features.

Pocket First Aid & CPR

Dan Woolley said Tuesday on The Today Show that he was in Haiti filming a documentary on the efforts to help the poverty-stricken children of the nation.  Woolley was at the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince when the 7.0 earthquake hit and the hotel collapsed around him.

Woolley is crediting his iPhone medical app, Pocket First Aid & CPR, for saving his life.  He used the light on his iPhone to examine his injuries.  Using the medical app on his iPhone, he was able to diagnose a broken foot and follow the instruction to treat himself.  He used his shirt to treat the excessive bleeding from the 3-inch cut on his leg and a sock to one on the back of his head.  He was also able to look up ways to prevent himself from going into shock.

“I kind of had some time to do some self-diagnosis down there,” Woolley said. “God was with me.”

Thanks to the iPhone app Woolley was able to return to Colorado Wednesday after spending time recovering at a Hospital in Miami.

Original iPhone and iPod touch titles have broken new ground for portable gaming, yet some of the most popular games have been the oldest.

Emulators and ports of classic games have an eager following, which makes Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection a brilliant answer to the demand. It’s a great concept unique to iPhone thanks to in-app purchasing.

Rather than charging for a full anthology of games, Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection will be offered as a free download from within which you can download emulated games. Drawing from a library packed with forgotten gems, Sega promises the opportunity to pick out the ones you want without being charged for games you don’t.

The core application comes with one free title – Space Harrier II – but a handful of others will be available for download the day of release: Sonic The Hedgehog, Shining Force, Golden Axe, and Ecco the Dolphin. We were able to play four of the games.

Space Harrier II

Included free with the core application, Space Harrier II is a respectable demonstration of old skool arcade action, though it’s not the most compelling example of what Genesis has to offer nor the best in terms of control. It’s unsurprisingly not as natural as using the original Genesis pad, yet does manage a modicum of basic control.

Much of the challenge comes in the lack of precision afforded the D-pad, which is also tough in Sonic The Hedgehog. Of course, it’s included free so lodging complaints seems overkill. Expect to spend money on buying something more compelling.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Not much has been altered from the standalone version released last May, which is a good thing considering the decent work done to ensure this classic is playable on iPhone and iPod touch. Thankfully the bug fixes applied in the v1.1 update to the standalone game are intact here. That means performance optimisation for older handsets.

Still, touch controls aren’t the most ideal way to play Sonic The Hedgehog. In fact, we’re keen to recommend playing it on a platform with physical buttons given the speedy gameplay. What really concerns us, though, is the steep price: $5.99. That’s way too rich for the game that’s already been released once before on the App Store.

Shining Force

Out of the four games played, Shining Force felt best suited to the touchscreen. It’s not much of a surprise considering the turn-based gameplay is far easier to control than twitchy Sonic or Space Harrier II.

The interface consists of a Genesis-style D-pad opposite A and B buttons situated in the bottom-right corner. Oddly, the directional pad appears at centre-left when playing in full screen mod: however, reverting to the alternate windowed view moves it to the lower-left corner.

Since the pad covers a good portion of the action in full screen mode, it will likely be best to play it in windowed mode.

Story-driven questing also makes it the longest game of the bunch. Obviously, the mechanics are rudimentary compared to contemporary tactical role-playing games, but for $2.99 it’ll be a solid deal.

Ecco the Dolphin

Speed is important in Ecco the Dolphin, but not in the same twitchy way as Sonic and so it fares much better with touch controls as a result. In fact, it felt pretty decent with the configuration: D-pad on the left and three buttons for sonar, sprint, and acceleration.

The game looks pretty good too – best of the bunch, to be sure. Our concern with Ecco has more to do with its legendary difficulty than anything else. In line with Shining Force, Ecco will be $2.99.

All four games, along with Golden Axe, will be available for download within Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection come February.

We’re not crazy audiophiles, and we can’t really make a realistic judgment in the middle of the Las Vegas Convention Center, but the sound quality was definitely passable. They’ve got a couple of models sporting in-line remote controls for iPhone / iPod touch, and you can score ‘em in any color to match your iPod nano. Check the neon ‘buds out in our gallery below.

One of the biggest gripes we heard from iPhone developers during 2009 was that it took forever for their apps to make it through the iTunes App Store approval process. Often apps would be disapproved for seemingly illogical reasons after a long wait in the approval queue, it has been heard from more than one developer that had just given up.

iTunes Connect, the portal through which iPhone developers submit apps and check sales, was down between December 23 – 28, 2009. Since that time, there have been a number of positive emails received from iPhone devs that indicate that Apple has resolved to quit holding up apps in 2010.

How fast are some apps making it through the process? Take developer Aaron Douglas’s free Migraine Diary [iTunes Link]; he submitted it on December 28th at 9 PM CT and received notice of the approval a 4 PM CT on the 31st of December — that’s less than three days.

But that’s downright slow compared to what Yuri, a developer at Atomic Cactus, experienced:

I’m a developer behind Atomic Cactus, we have 3 games currently in the app store, and they all took approximately 2-3 weeks to get approved. Today at 4:00 am I submitted for approval our latest app, which isn’t exactly a “fart app” (it’s a pretty polished puzzle game with OpenFeint). As of 1:30 pm today, the app is in the app store.

That’s nine and a half hours, folks! This is a small sampling of the many emails we’ve received from developers since just after Christmas.

Whether this is due to a New Year’s resolution, competition from the Android platform, or a new back-end system for processing apps, it’s a welcome change for iPhone developers and users alike.

Imagination, which counts Apple as one of its owners, has provided the GPU (graphics processing unit) for every iPhone to date, including the current iPhone 3GS PowerVR SGX, so it’s not unreasonable to assume the latest, greatest PowerVR SGX545 introduced at CES will be in the 4th generation iPhone, likely to be announced in June/July (and the iPod touch to follow):

Apple Insider reveals that:

Sources have now reported that Apple has detailed that Imagination’s PowerVR SGX is indeed the graphics processor used in the iPhone 3G S, and that it is “designed for OpenGL ES 2.0.” The new 2.0 specification of OpenGL for Embedded Systems eliminates most of the fixed-function rendering pipeline for a programmable approach to 3D rendering using shader programs.

So while we’re not yet getting that PA Semi + multicore ARM/PowerVT + OpenCL + Papermaker + ATI gurus system on a chip we’ve been fantasizing about this year… we’re still getting a clear focus on speed from Apple. And that’s a Good Thing.

SGX545 will also deliver OpenGL ES 2.x and OpenGL 3.2 to deliver class leading 3D graphics performance, and will also support OpenCL 1.0 full profile capability which will enable mobile and embedded applications to take maximum advantage of the capabilities offered by these GPU APIs for both 3D graphics and general purpose applications.

Could we see this spun into a new, ARM Cortex A9 multi-core cpu by Apple’s own PA Semi? We’ve already got great 3D gaming, what’s this one designed to do, burn our eyeballs into the back of our skulls?

ARM is showing off their new Cortex A9 multi-core mobile processor, which will scale over 2Ghz at less than 0.25W of power per proc — and since Apple is rumored to be a massive ARM licensee and Apple staff were hinting that developers should prepare themselves for multi-core, rumors once again resurface that this smoking hot chip might become part of the 4th generation iPhone and iPod touch. (As part of PA Semi system-on-a-chip, ‘natch).

The current iPhone 3GS and iPod touch G3, as well as a bunch of competing smartphones (and superphones, don’t get us started!) use the ARM Cortex A8. MacRumors is guessing it might just make its way into the iTablet/iSlate as well.

CES is ramping up folks, and remember TiPb will be there, so we’ll bring you back anything more we can find out.
