Soosiz – This is the best platforming game that we’ve played on the iPhone. It adopts the usual trappings of a traditional 2d platformer but perfectly mixes in a gravity defying mechanism that turns out to be a lot more than just a cute gimmick. Combine that with great controls and a ton of content, and you have one of our favorite iPhone games. (App Store)

Canabalt – This isn’t a particularly deep game. In fact, the average gaming session is probably measured in seconds rather than minutes. But with its simplicity and style, it managed to keep us coming back again and again throughout the month. You can try out the identical Flash version for free at Canabalt.com. ( App Store)

2XL ATV Offroad – We described this as a “console quality” iPhone racer. The game is technically impressive with beautiful graphics and manages to combine it with varied tracks, a proper career mode and Wi-Fi multiplayer to deliver one of the best racers in the App Store. ( App Store)

Boost 3D – We might not have been too over the top about the game when we first reviewed it, but over time we realized that Boost 3D is a game that we love to play. There’s something hypnotic about this tunnel runner that had us coming back to play it throughout the month. ( App Store)

Overview
Almost eerily identical to Evernote, the opening user menu of Take a Note gives you options to add a text note, an audio note, a drawing note, and a photo note. All notes that are created on the iPhone are editable, sortable, and searchable. WiFi access gives you the option to transfer notes to and from your computer or other wireless enabled sources. Notes can be emailed directly from the program and the app uses your contacts list to add recipients.

Skater Nation is Gameloft’s upcoming open-world skateboarding game which really puts the other skateboarding titles available on the platform to shame when it comes to overall depth and complexity. Obviously inspired by the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series of games, Skater Nation runs inside of a game engine that was described as a “sibling” to the one used in Gangstar to have a completely open city with multiple environments with absolutely no loading time as you travel from place to place.

The city consists of ten highly skater-friendly locales that range from indoor factories to an outdoor skate park, and even a street that was inspired by Lombard Street in San Francisco. (Although notably absent was the half mile line of cars waiting to drive down the street.) Featuring two main game modes, you can either freely skate around the city, or choose one of 6 initially available skaters and progress through a career mode where you will complete a series of 36 challenges, and unlock both equipment upgrades and 2 additional skaters.

Amazon: Amazon’s usually the first place I look during a fit of impulse buying, which their iPhone app now makes stupidly easy.

Product searches, comparisons and account management are a given, but what really pushes this one over the edge is a new feature called “Remembers.” Just snap a picture of a mysterious product or thing, and Amazon will get back to you with a surprisingly accurate, impressively quick suggestion as to what it is. Then it will sell said thing to you. Magic.

But recent comments by developers and analysts have shown otherwise, and Gamasutra speaks to multiple parties to evaluate the size of the problem and whether there’s anything that can be done about it. Quoting: ‘Greg Yardley confirms that getting ripped off by pirates is the rule rather than the exception. Yardley is co-founder and CEO of Manhattan-based Pinch Media, a company that provides analytic software for iPhone games. … “What we’ve determined is that over 60% of iPhone applications have definitively been pirated based on our checks,” he reveals, “and the number is probably higher than that.” While it’s impossible to estimate how much money developers are losing, it involves more than the price of the game, he says. “What developers lose is not necessarily the sale,” he explains, “because I don’t believe pirates would have bought the game if they hadn’t stolen it. DotEmu, who brought the retro titles Nicky Boom, Krypton Egg, and Golvellius to the App Store, has just given Touch Arcade an exclusive heads up on their latest IP acquisition. And for shooter fans, this is pretty much the best news you could hear: The renowned shooter classic R-Type is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch. The studio informs us that development is currently under way and the title should hit the App Store sometime in the next few months.

“We are very pleased to work on R-Type and to start our collaboration with Irem Software Engineering Inc. Our main goal is to make the best touch version possible of this great game to seduce both fans and new players. This is really a great game and we are eager to release it!” said Xavier Liard, CEO of DotEmu.

For those somehow unfamiliar with R-Type, a bit of history. R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter released to the arcade by Japanese publisher Irem in 1987. The game is set in the 22nd century and places the player in control of the R-9a “Arrowhead” fighter craft with the goal of defending humanity against the bio-mechanical alien life form known as the “Bydo.” Battle is waged in and among a complex series of levels, some machine-like and metallic, some biological in nature.

R-Type is widely considered to be one of the best shooters ever made and is known for its viciously designed levels and extreme difficulty. (IGN ranked it 7th in their list of the 10 most difficult games to beat.) The game has been ported to a great many platforms, including the Xbox Live Arcade and the Wii Virtual Console, and has spawned many sequels as well as imitators.

The arrival of a classic of this magnitude — one that stands so notably apart in its genre — is wonderful news for iPhone gamers.  DotEmu is a French development and publishing house dedicated to bringing classic 80′s / 90′s games to modern platforms. DotEmu has not, as yet, released any iPhone-specific screenshots or demo video, but we will make readers aware the moment we get them.

The game is also an opportunity to show the possibilites that can be explored at the iPhone by enterprises and brazilian developers, “We have, actually in Brasil, the tecnologic capability of investing in more interesting apps that escapes from the pattern that we usually see around” says Márcio Pissardo, director and founder of Livetouch.
