 3. The iPhone has three cool sensors. First, it has an accelerometer that detects when you’ve rotated the iPhone into landscape orientation. In programs like Photos, Safari, and iPod, it triggers the screen image to rotate as well.

Camouflaged behind the black glass where you can’t see them except with a bright flashlight are two more sensors: a proximity sensor that shuts off the screen illumination and touch sensitivity when the phone is against your head (it works only in the Phone application), and an ambient-light sensor that brightens the display when you’re in sunlight and dims it in darker places.

Apple says that it experimented with having the light sensor active all the time, but it was weird to have the screen get brighter and darker all the time. So the sensor now samples the ambient light, and adjusts the brightness; it does this only once—each time you unlock the phone after waking it.

You can use that tip to your advantage. By covering up the sensor (just above the earpiece) as you unlock the phone, you force it to a low-power, dim screen-brightness setting (because the phone believes that it’s in a dark room). Or by holding it up to a light as you wake it, you get full brightness. In both cases, you’ve saved all the taps and navigation it would have taken you to find the manual brightness slider in Settings.

 4. I’m going to share with you the solution to one of the most annoying things, if not THE most annoying thing, about typing on the iPhone:

The punctuation keys and alphabet keys appear in two different keyboard layouts.

So every time you want to type a period or a comma, it’s a three-step, awkward dance: (1) Tap the “.?123” key in the lower left to summon the punctuation layout. (2) Type the period. (3) Type the ABC key in the lower left to return to the alphabet layout.

Imagine how excruciating it is to type, for example, “a P.O. Box in the U.S.A.”! That’s 34 finger taps and 10 mode

The iPhone doesn’t register most key presses until you *release* your finger. I discovered that the Shift and Punctuation keys register their taps on the *press-down* instead.

So here’s what you can do, all in one motion:

    A. Touch the “.?123” key, but don’t lift your finger as the punctuation layout appears.

    B. Slide your finger a half inch onto the period or comma key, and release.

 Incredibly, the ABC layout returns automatically. You’ve typed a period or a comma with one    finger touch instead of three. In fact, you can type ANY of the punctuation symbols the same way.

This makes a HUGE difference in the usability of the keyboard.

     C. The iPod module on the iPhone starts out with buttons along the bottom for summoning   four  lists: Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

But what about Albums? Genres? Composers?

They’re there, all right, but hidden; you have to tap More to see them.

But what if you use those lists more often than Artists or Songs? No problem: you can replace one of those starter buttons with a list of your own.

Tap More, and then tap the Edit button (upper-left corner). You arrive at the Configure screen. Here’s the complete list of music-and-video sorting lists: Albums, Podcasts, Audiobooks, Genres, Composers, Compilations, Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.

To replace one of the four starter icons, use a finger to drag an icon from the top half of the screen downward, directly onto the existing icon you want to replace. It lights up to show the success of your drag.

When you release your finger, you’ll see that the new icon has replaced the old one. Tap Done in the upper-right corner.

 6. When sending a text you can just tap the space bar twice at the end of a sentence and will automatically put in a full stop.

 7. Press the home button twice to change/pause the song and adjust the volume. This does work, but it depends on what you have the Home button set to do. Mine goes to favorite contacts when I double click it. It You can be set to go to your Home page, to Favorites, or to iPod.

 8. Jailbreak it and have your mind blown. Then you can: Record videos, use VoIP on edge/3g (or wifi) download from safari so i can find songs on the move and play via dtunes, custom themes, make your own ringtones, software unlock to use other carriers. GREAT FOR TRAVELING LIKE I DO! sending MMS via Swirly MMS, (picture texts), NINTENDOOOOOOO, tehering your iphone to your computer to use your edge/3g data on your laptop, GREAT for people on the move! doesnt cost extra, just uses the data form your plan.  9. One of my favorite…. When playing a song in iPod (play/pause volume controls), swipe right on the cover art to return to the track list. Make sure that the options menu (shuffle/repeat controls) isn’t on screen when you do this, otherwise it won’t work.

 10. This is pretty basic, but some people don’t know about it. For websites you visit often, you can place an icon on your home page that links directly to it. Note: FYI: The Facebook app is extremely buggy, so instead of using it I put a link to Facebook Mobile on my home page.

 11. When texting, the words just automatically show up and corrects the word you are writing (this is annoying)!Especially if you dont text in english! To turn automatic texting off; Update your iPhone OS to 2.1 or higher version. Newer OS has an option to turn off the auto-correction, it is located under “Settings > General > Keyboard”

 12. This is probably something obvious for Mac users who use iPhoto ’09 and the iPhone 3G to take photo’s….. but….. each photo you take when you allow the location service adds your geographic location to the image. So when you import these images into iPhoto ’09, it can show you where the photo was taken. It can be a little buggy when taking images indoors as the GPS can’t get a fix.

Note: Windows users, I believe Picasa does something similar.

  13. This was one of the best things about the iphone and I was thrilled to discover it. You can have your banking, o2, paypal etc all as icons on the homepage, it’s great!

 14. If you hit the space bar twice it inserts a period and space

 15. if you hold down on the home button, it will force quit an app and take you strait to the home screen.

The app taps the Twitter API thousands of times per hour to give you a realtime feed of comments generated by these people. What comes out in the app is a constantly updated stream of commentary that is a lot like any Twitter feed, often interesting, sometimes mundane, but always addictive. The best part about this app is that it doesn’t require you to have a Twitter account or even know anything about Twitter. It takes all the NFL relevant Tweets from Twitter and categorizes them for you.

The app offers four main categories of content to view: All, Teams, Blogs, and Press. The Teams section is where you want to be to follow only the Tweets from a particular team. The Blogs section aggregates content from Fansided.com, a collection of premium content from unofficial team blogs. The Press section contains a feed of Tweets from real sports commentators and journalists who give their professional take on what’s happening in the NFL. Any one of these features could stand on its own, but when you combine them together you get an unparalleled view of the NFL that cannot be found anywhere else. Not ESPN. Not Sport Center. It would be nearly impossible to set up your own Twitter account to get this kind of view. Earlier this week the NFL officially banned Twittering by any player, coach, assistant, or media person (and their extended support groups) during a game. This includes 90 minutes prior to the game and until the post-game media conferences are complete. Last year, you might follow the Tweets from a bored place kicker right on the sideline, but not this year. The interesting aspect about this new rule is that it covers media people as well. Does that include bloggers? What about Twitterers? The NFL cannot stop fans in the stadium from posting Tweets during a game, but it seems they would prefer it that way. The realtime web cannot be stopped, and certainly not by the NFL.

In any case, this new anti-Twitter rule means that you won’t get updates from players during the actual games, but you will hear plenty from them otherwise. Take this morning, for instance, in Realtime Pro Football ‘09 we saw that the Indianapolis Colts had arrived in Cincinnati by bus for tonight’s preseason game against the Bengals. Colt’s defensive end, Raheem Brock, posted the following updates which I read less than a minute after he posted them.

Pretty entertaining stuff (unless you’re a Bengals fan), but then he followed a minute later with this post (apparently after learning how to turn off ALL CAPS):

I live in Cincy, Im a huge Colts fan, Bengals fans are hilarious. Playing them twice a year would be like have 3 bye weeks!

Following all the player smack-talk is a blast. Using this app is like having the players miked up when they’re not playing, giving fans completely new perspective from inside their heads. It’s really terrific for fans of the game, but for the Buffalo Bills, it might not be so good. Terrell Owens has never been one to keep his mouth shut, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can obey the NFL’s new anti-Twitter rule. Our prediction? He’s the first player to get fined for violating this rule.

Whether it’s T.O. or some other player getting slapped by the NFL for spouting off at the wrong time, one thing’s for sure, it’s gonna be fun as heck watching it all play out in realtime with Realtime Pro Football ‘09, one of the best darn football apps for iPhone and iPod touch.

Access your files from afar

If you don’t need to control your Mac, but you do want to be able to grab files from it, Flying Mac’s $35 FarFinder is a better alternative to a VNC client. FarFinder lets you use a Web browser (a free iPhone application awaits Apple approval) to navigate your Mac in a Finder-like view-far easier than trying to fit your Mac’s entire screen on your iPhone’s tiny display. You can e-mail files to yourself, or in some cases even view files (images and PDFs, for example) in the browser. But keep in mind that your computer has to be turned on for this to work.

Send files to your iPhone

Before you head off to that important business meeting, you want to make sure you have the company’s latest sales figures and competitive analysis at your fingertips. In the days before the App Store existed, there wasn’t an easy way to stash files on your iPhone and view them. Now you have several options.

To move files from your Mac to your iPhone over a local wireless network, try Magnetism Studios’ $5 FileMagnet . FileMagnet will also let you view iPhone-compatible files-though you can’t edit them. Keep in mind that for these files to be viewable on the iPhone, their names must have the appropriate extension-.jpg or .doc, for example.

If you want to share a document with other Macs as well as with your iPhone, or if you like the concept of instantaneous access, turn your attention to Sharpcast’s SugarSync. The online service expands the concept of push data-Apple’s MobileMe, for example, will “push” contacts, calendars, and e-mail to your iPhone-to include documents and media files. You simply upload files to SugarSync’s servers via the SugarSync Manager application installed on your Mac, and those files become available to other computers and mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPod touch. Install the free SugarSync iPhone app and you have nearly immediate access to those files. You can view iPhone-compatible files as well as stream MP3 and AAC audio files. Pricing starts at 10GB of storage for about $2.50 a month.

Sneak files off your iPhone

Want to turn the tables and copy files from your iPhone-including call logs, SMS messages, media files, and notes? Ecamm Network’s $20 PhoneView is the way to do this. When you plug your iPhone into your Mac, PhoneView launches and lets you browse some of the contents of your phone. Find an item you want and click on Copy From iPhone to move it to your Mac. This is handy for restoring your music files if a dead hard drive kills your iTunes library. The program also lets you create folders on the iPhone for storing your files (you can’t access these files on the iPhone-they’re for the purpose of storage only).

Sync with multiple calendars

Keeping events in sync between multiple people using multiple Macs and iPhones is no easy feat. The secret is to create an iCal-compatible Google calendar.

To do this, set up a Google calendar and use the online tools to share it with your family members or coworkers. On each Mac that needs access to the calendar, download the free Google Calaboration-yes, it’s spelled that way-and select the Google calendars you wish to synchronize with iCal. Now when you add or edit events with this calendar in either iCal or Google Calendar, those events are updated for everyone subscribed to it. To keep the iPhones in sync, simply configure them in iTunes to sync to this iCal calendar.

Push around your Google data

If you keep your contacts, e-mail, and calendars in Google’s apps and want that data pushed to your iPhone, check out Google Sync. Once you set up a Google Sync account, changes to your Google contacts, calendars, and e-mail will immediately sync with your iPhone and your computer. What’s more, the service is free-unlike the $99 MobileMe account that Apple requires for its push service.

Sync notes and to-dos

At the moment, Apple doesn’t offer any way of syncing data from the iPhone’s Notes app or to-dos from iCal on the Mac. Although Apple has promised to offer a way to sync notes in the upcoming iPhone 3.0 software update (no word yet on to-dos), there’s no need to wait. If you’ve been as frustrated by this forehead-slappingly-obvious omission as we are, forget iCal and Notes; the key to this particular magic trick lies elsewhere.

Keep It Online As long as you usually have a good Internet connection, one workable alternative to syncing is to use an online service. RememberTheMilk, Toodledo, and Google’s Gmail offer free online to-do lists you can access from Safari on your iPhone or from any browser on your Mac. (The first two sites also support notes.) To set this up in Gmail, go to your Gmail settings screen, click on the Labs tab, and enable Tasks. Tasks will appear in the normal Gmail screen on your Mac; to view them on your iPhone, browse to http://gmail.com/tasks.

Sync via the Web If you prefer to keep your notes and to-dos in an iPhone app that’s accessible even when you’re offline, you have several options. Appigo’s $10 Todo and Toodledo’s own $4 iPhone app both offer powerful to-do-list features-including notes-and sync with Toodledo.com. If tasks are less important to you, you can save money by going with Appigo’s $5 Notebook, which works similarly but focuses on notes. Unfortunately, none of these services syncs with iCal, so you’ll need to manage your to-do lists via the service’s Web site while at your Mac.

Skip the Web To forego a Web browser altogether, you’ll need a program that has both iPhone and Mac versions. Ross Tulloch’s $4 SyncBook syncs notes between the two platforms. On the Mac, notes appear as text files that you can edit in TextEdit. For advanced task- and project-management, Cultured Code’s Things (iPhone version, $10; Mac version, $50) is an attractive and easy-to-use program that includes schedules, priorities, tags, and notes; the iPhone and Mac versions automatically sync over your local network.

Fool the iPhone If you’re determined to sync notes without any outside help, try disguising your notes as something else. In Address Book, create a new contact and place your text in the contact’s Notes field. Mark it as a business and give it a useful name. Address Book on your Mac will reflect changes you make on the iPhone, and vice versa. The downside, of course, is that you have to manage your notes using contacts, but with some clever naming you can keep notes grouped together at the beginning or end of your contacts list.

Using an interface similar to the iPhone’s home screen, it provides icons/links to a large selection of iPhone applications. You can sort the list by date and category to help you find specific types of applications or to find new applications that have recently been released.

Soosiz – This is the best platforming game that we’ve played on the iPhone. It adopts the usual trappings of a traditional 2d platformer but perfectly mixes in a gravity defying mechanism that turns out to be a lot more than just a cute gimmick. Combine that with great controls and a ton of content, and you have one of our favorite iPhone games. (App Store)

Canabalt – This isn’t a particularly deep game. In fact, the average gaming session is probably measured in seconds rather than minutes. But with its simplicity and style, it managed to keep us coming back again and again throughout the month. You can try out the identical Flash version for free at Canabalt.com. ( App Store)

2XL ATV Offroad – We described this as a “console quality” iPhone racer. The game is technically impressive with beautiful graphics and manages to combine it with varied tracks, a proper career mode and Wi-Fi multiplayer to deliver one of the best racers in the App Store. ( App Store)

Boost 3D – We might not have been too over the top about the game when we first reviewed it, but over time we realized that Boost 3D is a game that we love to play. There’s something hypnotic about this tunnel runner that had us coming back to play it throughout the month. ( App Store)

Almost eerily identical to Evernote, the opening user menu of Take a Note gives you options to add a text note, an audio note, a drawing note, and a photo note. It’s probably overkill for anyone who doesn’t spend a few hours a day pecking out instant messages, but hey, some people do that.

You can debate the long-term efficacy of brain training games all you want, but there’s no denying that a few quick puzzles in the morning help jolt you awake, and at least make you feel a little sharper. Anyone who’s used a prior Kawashima game will take to this one instantly, and any exercises that’ve been taken out on account of the iPhone’s lack of stylus have been replaced with something equally clever.

If you’ve ever seen on of those spectacularly detailed “paintings” done on the iPhone, chances are it was created with this. This is fingerpainting in 2009.

This is an app that started out simple—it was only after a few artists really started leveraging it that it feature set caught up with its potential. Today it’s got layers, all manner of brushes, multiple photo importing, and plenty more features you wouldn’t expect to see in a mobile image editor.

Chorus

You know the App Store needs an overhaul when apps like Chorus, which help you find other apps, are necessary. But alas, they are.

Chorus crowdsources the effort to cut through the endless jungle of trash. Chorus is a bit like Apple’s native App Store app, except with drastically shifted emphasis: instead of giving category “Top” lists, which rank apps by overall download numbers, Chorus only pitches you apps that’ve been explicitly recommended by someone. These someones could include other friends who use Chorus, nearby Chorus users, or a stable of “App Mavens”-online reviewers and tech journalists, mostly.

ConvertBot

Plenty of apps can technically deal with unit conversions as well as ConvertBot can, but none of them have its fantastic, super-fast interface.

The proud will always stick with the calculator/memory method, but the rest of us can indulge in Covertbot’s wheel-based controls, which, once set up properly, reduce just about any conversion into a three-second process. That’s 9.50662939 × 10^-8 years, in case you were wondering.

And if you’re not willing to pay for a Twitter app—understandable!—Echofon isn’t too shabby. It’s super-fast and stupid-simple, so it’ll do well by all but the most obnoxiously obsessed Twitterers.

What it lacks in bells and whistles, Echofon more than makes up for where it counts, at least for most: It’s as quick as Twitter apps get, and caches Tweets, so you can read them later on without a connection. It doesn’t support multiple accounts, but most reasonable people don’t need that. (I’m looking directly at you, @mattbuchanan)

This was an essential app from the get-go, and it’s been steadily evolving—like the site—for the last year. Version 3.0 was a total refresh, and supports nearly every one of Facebook’s sprawling features, sometimes better than the site itself.

The new, panel-based interface takes a little getting used to, but once you’re acclimated to it it’s the most effective way to throw yourself, fingers first, into the black hole timesuck that is Facebook.

I Love Katamari

As far as the music goes, though, you’re bound to find some new stuff here, especially if you don’t mind more eclectic tunes.

The end results are phenomenal, especially if you musical tastes lean a little toward right field.

Hey, so, have you heard your iPhone is also a really, truly good turn-by-turn navigation device? Because with the pricey-but-probably-worth-it Navigon, it is.

There’s a lot to chew on in the space, and before you drop a hundred bucks on an iPhone app I suggest you take a gander at Wilson’s extensive breakdown of the three forerunners. In short, though, Navigon is a dependable option, with the cleanest interface of the lot, but no easy way to get a full route overview. It stores its content locally, so data connectivity isn’t a worry.

Easily the most useful push app Apple’s let through the gates, Prowl lets you forward any Growl notifications from your Mac or PC—everything from Mail to IM to Torrent downloads to Tweets—directly to your phone.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Growl is a free system-wide notification system for Mac OS, and as of a few months ago, Windows. Any app that runs through noteworthy events—download completions, news messages, etc—can use it to display an onscreen message. Prowl simply bridges your desktop notifications with your phone. Practically, this translates to push everything, if you care to spend enough time setting it up. Some folks are even offering plugins that let you use the app without leaving Growl running.

Given that you can’t make VoIP calls unless you’re connected to Wi-Fi, Skype is surprisingly useful: even if you’re tethered to your router’s range, having a phone-shaped tool to make Skype calls is really nice, and its messaging service is a solid, not to mention fairly ubiquitous, way to keep in touch with people.

What will it look like?

Last year’s model, the iPhone 4, had a glass backplate that could get scratched. It’s possible that the iPhone 5 will have a brushed metal backplate, which would help keep it from scratching and make the phone lighter as well.

There have been some recent rumors that the phone could get considerably thinner, even tapering toward the bottom. The square edges could round out, making it look a little more like an iPod touch.

Besides that, we’ve heard that Steve Jobs isn’t a fan of physical buttons; the iPhone 4 only has one, on its front. The iPhone 5 might turn that one physical home button into a virtual, on-screen home button, which would get out of the way while you’re watching videos. This would give it a four-inch screen, half an inch bigger than the iPhone 4′s. But another rumor has the display bumping up to only a 3.7-inch screen, and the home button getting slightly larger.

Remember, none of this info is coming from Apple. It’s all rumor, speculation and guessing, so take it with a grain of salt.

What performance upgrades will it have?

It’ll have a faster, probably dual-core processor,

plus more memory and an improved camera — one that might be able to take 8 megapixel still pictures and record 1080p HD video. You’ll be able to play more realistic games, switch between open apps more quickly, and keep more web pages open at once.

Beyond that, you can bet that Apple doesn’t want a repeat of “Antennagate,” and will be paying special attention to the iPhone 5′s antenna to make sure there are fewer connection issues.

Will it have any new features?

We already know what features the iPhone 5 won’t have: A removable battery, a memory card slot, and support for Adobe Flash videos. These features are commonly seen on other phones, but are not what customers expect from Apple products.

One feature that Apple recently filed a patent on is being called a “Smart Bezel” by rumor sites. These are areas just outside the screen that can light up and are touch sensitive. They could be game controls or battery indicators, or let you use new finger-swipe gestures to control your iPhone!

Another feature they might add is called NFC, or Near-Field Communication. This is a technology that would let you pay for things by waving your iPhone near a sensor, sort of like what some ‘wave-to-pay’ credit cards can do today. NFC is already in widespread use in Japan, and is being tested in the United States. Apple may decide to hold off on it, though, until people are more comfortable using their phones to make payments.

One other possibility is that the iPhone 5 will get induction charging. That’s where you plug in a separate charging pad, and your iPhone recharges just by touching it.

When will the iPhone 5 be announced?

Our best guess is that it’ll be sometime this fall — they might choose to announce it at the yearly iPod event in September, for instance, which would mean that it’d be available in time for the holidays. The iPhone 4 was announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference last June, though, so the iPhone 5 might debut at this year’s WWDC … or it might not appear until next year. Who knows?

It’s possible that Apple’s next big iPhone announcement will be for a 4G Verizon iPhone, instead of the iPhone 5. Networks like Verizon are rolling out super-high speed, 4G wireless infrastructure, and competitors’ phones are already taking advantage of it. Don’t expect Apple to lag behind them for long!

Are there any other new iPhones expected?

One persistent rumor has been that of an “iPhone Nano,” a tiny iPhone with a smaller screen and far less memory. Apple’s been working on a way to let you access your iTunes library online, which might let you get to your music and apps without needing the expensive flash memory chips that a regular iPhone has. That would make the iPhone Nano cheaper as well as smaller.

On the other hand, Apple normally just sells last year’s model at a reduced price, for people who want a cheaper iPhone. Plus, screen resolution issues make a dramatically smaller iPhone unlikely … so file this one under “maybe.”

Will there be any surprises?

There usually are! We don’t know what Apple’s planning, so stay tuned to find out.

STORY

The tribes of the mythical island Tikonia have for centuries worshipped the Tiki God.
