UniversalRemoteI love my Logitech Harmony remote, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t jump on the opportunity to ditch the thing forever and simplify my digital world even further. A new third-party accessory and software combo announced at CES, (read more about CES – “the world’s largest consumer technology trade show” below), will allow me to do that by turning my iPhone or iPod touch into a Universal remote capable of controlling all of my home theater equipment.

It sounds promising, but it also brings back memories of apps for the Palm pilot that were supposed to do the very same thing. The Palm devices had built-in IR communication, so all you needed was the software, which sounded great, but ended up being clumsy and not really that usable on a regular basis. I still have a Palm in a bedside drawer that I occasionally drag out to use for that purpose, in fact. It never stays out long.

Hopefully the iPhone’s accessory, which is called the L5 Remote and will cost around $49.95 when it hits retail stores this February, won’t suffer from the same failings. Once you have the dock-connecting IR blaster, you can get the application for free from the App Store. It promises to control televisions, DVDs, DVRs, cable boxes, audio equipment and more. I’ve got my fingers crossed for some unofficial support for the Logitech Harmony PS3 adapter. The blaster is said to have a functional range of up to 30 feet.

One place where the iPhone’s universal remote app should easily trump the dated Palm version is in user interface. No messing about with a stylus or hit-and-miss finger touch response with Apple’s smartphone. And you’ll be able to create your own custom button configuration by dragging and dropping the appropriate commands from various devices in whatever arrangement you choose. That should make it easier than my physical remote, too, since I won’t have to rely on the pre-arranged layout of the buttons, which is sometimes far from intuitive depending on what device you’re controlling.

The press release for the L5 describes a “short, guided training sequence” before you can begin using it with your home theater setup, which could be coded PR speak for a long and arduous process of holding your remote up to the IR blaster add-on for each command you want your iPhone to learn. I’m really hoping that the app comes with a built-in code database for common brands and makes of equipment, or that they at least open it up to user-generated databases.

As of right now, L5’s web site is just a placeholder, which isn’t a promising sign, but keep your eyes peeled for the official release of the attachment and software next month. Hopefully by then there will at least be a place on the web to go looking for more info.

Some time ago, it was mentioned that a new Multitouch patent could be implemented on the iTablet, but we now have info of a release date and that Foxconn have the order.

    Yes that’s right, that Apple tablet you and I have been waiting on the past four years will only have to wait just a little bit longer.  If our source is good (and I’m told he or she is) we can all expect an early 2010 delivery of the tablet of our dreams (or so we’ve been hoping).

    Engadget have learned from DigiTimes, they have learned that Foxconn have the manufacturing rights for the Apple Tablet PC and that they will release the device in Q1 2010. Foxconn says that they have set an initial shipment of 300,000 to 400,000 per quarter.

    This figure seems a little modest, Apple shift around 2.6 million Macs per quarter, which should give an indication to how many Tablet PCs units they will shift. According to DigiTime the iTablet will come with a 10.6-inch touchscreen, which we mentioned above could have the multitouch system.

    Apparently, Steve Jobs has been the major hold up with the realization of this device.  That’s both a good thing and a bad thing.  Bad because there are far too many people who wanted to buy this mythical device years ago already, and a good thing because you know Steve only approves the best of the best.  I wouldn’t expect Jobs to allow any but the most amazing tablet device out of the door at Apple, especially with such a long running rumor surrounding said device.

    And it seems that Steve is finally happy.  I like it when Steve’s happy, because when Steve’s happy, we’re all happy…with the possible exception of your wallet.  Though the rumored price point is somewhere between a 32GB iPhone and a low end MacBook.  I’m personally guessing around $600 or $700.  I wouldn’t expect the full specs on this thing to be available or even accurate, but you can expect something with a 10 inch screen and supposedly 3G data.  Think of a device that looks like a super sized iPod touch (like the artist’s rendition above).  And I also wouldn’t be surprised to find not an Intel processor, but one of those in-house designed chips we talked about a while back.

    Personally, I believe most of this rumor.  Apple would be insane to never release a product that so many consumers want blindly.  I sincerely hope they don’t choose to require a 3G data plan with this device.  There are rumors circulating that it would be offered only through Verizon, effectively requiring many Apple users to have monthly plans with both AT&T and Verizon.  Bad, bad, bad, idea.  How about we just keep it as a regular tablet-like device and we can just find WiFi for it, or buy our own 3G data plans to use with it if we choose. Time will tell, but we’re getting sick of waiting.  Are you?

    WASHINGTON (AFP) – Apple has begun removing risque iPhone and iPod Touch applications from its online App Store, including some which had previously been approved for sale, according to reports.

    Technology blog TechCrunch and The Wall Street Journal said the new policy towards adult-themed contents had resulted, for example, in the deletion of applications featuring bikini models.

    TechCrunch said Apple had begun notifying application developers earlier this week that apps with “overtly sexual content” were being removed.

    “If we find these apps contain inappropriate material, we remove them and request the developer make any necessary changes in order to be distributed by Apple,” the Journal quoted an Apple statement as saying.

    The Journal said the move appeared to be part of an effort by Apple to clean up the App Store ahead of the shipping late next month of its new iPad tablet computer.

    The newspaper said the App Store, which offers more than 140,000 programs, will be an important part of the marketing of the iPad, which Apple intends to promote as a device for families and schools.

    A journalist checks out the TechCrunch Internet site in Washington, DC. TechCrunch, a leading Silicon Valley technology blog, was attacked by hackers overnight, it said Tuesday.

    Why Apple’s New Ban Against Sexy Apps Is Scary

    On 2/18/10 it was reported that a new restriction that was being applied to Apple’s App Store: no more applications with “overtly sexual content”. At this point, the exact nature of that ban is unclear. But it’s a policy shift that may alarm many developers — even those whose applications have nothing to do with sexy content.

    First, a little background: we’ve seen numerous reports about applications that have been pulled from the App Store for featuring sexual content, but there are still plenty of apps that have names like “Magic Boobs”. I reached out to Apple PR to ask if they’d enacted a sweeping policy change that could affect many applications, or if they were only removing a handful of applications with especially explicit content. This morning an Apple spokesperson sent back a response. It doesn’t have any answers:

    “Whenever we receive customer complaints about objectionable content we review them. If we find apps that contain inappropriate material we remove them from the App Store and request the developer to make any necessary changes to their apps in order to be distributed by Apple.”

    Apple was asked to further clarify their stance — does this only apply to applications that have received complaints? Do they have any plans to specify what exactly makes an application too sexy for the App Store?  I’ll be surprised if they get much more specific.

    Now, it’s true that many of these “sexy” applications were little more than spam, featuring titillating titles, perhaps a handful of sexy photos, and little else. There were some applications that included more functionality, but it’s safe to say that the average quality of the applications on the App Store has almost certainly improved because of the new ban. But it’s still a disturbing move on Apple’s part.

    Most worrying is that “sexy” applications were already blocked at one point until Apple specifically changed its policies to begin letting them in. It was only a little over a year ago that the words “Boobs” and “Booty” in an application’s description weren’t allowed. But Apple made the conscious decision to lift that ban. In effect, Apple sent a message to developers that on a platform where the rules are nebulous and anything innovative is risky, these applications were safe. Now it’s changing its mind.

    Since the App Store first launched in July 2008, Apple has gradually loosened restrictions on what kinds of applications it would approve. In December 2008, it started approving “humor” apps like iFart and Pull My Finger, as well as an NC-17 rating for adult applications. And over the last year, it began allowing more and more sexy applications — it even began offering parental controls with the iPhone 3.0 software update to help parents keep what their kids accessed in check.

    Now Apple is moving in the other direction, and it’s setting a scary precedent. It’s showing that it’s comfortable throwing out applications that developers have spent their time and money building, without even bothering to give them advance notice. It’s one thing to have an application get denied when it’s first submitted — it’s another thing entirely to have the rug pulled out from under you once your app has thousands of downloads and customers. Is Apple going to start blocking apps like Qik if it builds its own live streaming service? Are iFart’s days numbered? Could Apple simply ban all NC-17 rated applications because too many parents complain?

    And then there’s an entirely different issue: censorship. Apple is now one of the world’s largest gatekeepers to content, with a store that encompasses music, video, applications, and soon, books and magazines. And it’s shown before that it’s a totally inconsistent hypocrite when it comes to which content it’s willing to sell. Have exposed breasts in an R rated move? Sell it! Jiggling boobs in a silly iPhone application? Banned. Apple previously blocked an iPhone application that allowed users to access the Kama Sutra. What happens if it gets too many complaints about iTunes making it too easy to purchase books and magazines with sexual content?

    Let’s say you’re at a store and you want to ask your spouse which product they like better. You could turn on Knocking, “knock” on their phone, then they would get a message saying you want to share. Then you just turn your camera on the different products you’re looking at, and it shows up on their phone. Here are a couple other examples offered by Brian Meehan, co-founder of Point Heads Software, the Danbury, Conn., development studio that created Knocking: If you’re fishing, you could use Knocking to share the great view, or if you’re stuck in traffic you could use the app to show family or coworkers how bad things are on the highway.

    I haven’t tried the application myself, but I have seen a live demo as well as a video, and both suggest the video quality is decent, if a little jerky, and is broadcast with only a few seconds’ delay. Neither fact undermines Knocking’s essential coolness.

    Pointy Heads actually released a more limited version of the Knocking app in November, which focused on photo-sharing. The full version was rejected from the App Store due to some user interface features that Apple said fell afoul of its policies. (Meehan was a bit vague on the exact violation.)

    It seems like this is becoming a common story among iPhone developers, but Meehan decided to take his concerns straight to the top — he sent an email to Apple chief executive Steve Jobs recounting his history as a lifelong Apple fan, and outlining his concerns with the decision, such as the fact that other apps live in the store seemed to offer the same feature that got Knocking rejected. Shortly afterward, Meehan said he got a call from Apple “upper management,” who said they were calling about his email to Jobs. A few more phone calls later and the app was approved without any revision from Point Heads.

    “It was a great feeling to know that they are listening and they do care,” Meehan said.

    Knocking is available as a free app for the first 50,000 users (here’s the iTunes link), and will then cost $2.99. Pointy Heads plans to demonstrate a version for Android phones at the Consumer Electronics Show next January.

    Some analysts were speculating that the roll out of Google’s Nexus One –unveiled today in Mountain View —  could present something of a headline risk for Apple shares. Global equities research analyst Trip Chowdhry wrote in a note published Monday:

    We think, there is a near term headline risk to Apple’s Stock, and it may be prudent for investors with short term horizon to protect their downside risk on Apple. However, investors with long term horizon should be fine, as Apple will be able to catch up with Google over the next 6 months or so, and the final winners in Smart Phone segment will be Google and Apple against less innovative company like RIMM.

    But judging from the immediate market reaction, (Indicated on the graph above), Google shares seem to be the ones that have suffered a bit on the announcement of the phone, which costs $529 without a contract and $179 with a two-year T-Mobile contract. Google shares dropped a bit less than three dollars about the same time the press conference began. Granted, that’s not a giant move with a stock trading above $620. Google is down 0.4% on the day. Apple is losing altitude too, but still in positive territory for the day at 0.2%.

    KEY DIFFERENCES

    Storage capacity and add ons
    Both the iPhone and the Nexus One have the same maximum storage capacity of 32GB. The main difference is iPhone storage is built into the phone, with the 3GS available in either 16GB or 32GB whilst the Google phone has variable storage with a microSD slot. The Google smartphone is sold with a 4GB card, which can changed to a maximum of 32 GB. The Google phone also differs as the battery is detachable and replaceable, whereas the iPhone phone battery is built into the device.

    Apps
    Apple currently boasts some 93,200 applications available for download from the iTunes store.  Ranging from free to paid, an entire spectrum of applications are available, covering social media, outdoor activities, making music, planning meals and activities to games, drawing, media and information services. There are currently 20,000 applications available for the Google phone, which is expected to increase as new apps are developed for the device.

    Operating system
    One of the key differences lies in the operating systems the two phones use.  The Google Nexus One runs on Android 2.1, open-source software for mobile devices.  Its openness makes it unique and is designed to allow developers to collaborate and innovation to be sped up. With a progressive open-source license it enables operators and manufacturers to design, build and distribute their own products. The iPhone runs exclusively on Apple software which limits the device to official distribution via the App store and iTunes.

    Camera
    The Google smartphone camera boasts 5 megapixels, autofocus, 2x digital focus and a built in LED flash. In comparison the iPhone camera is 3 megapixels with autofocus. Both phones have video recording capacities but the iPhone has inbuilt video editing abilities.

    Voice command
    Both phones also include voice command features. The iPhone allows the operator to find a contact or a music stored in the iTunes library. The iPhone 3GS also enables the users to record, store and distribute voice memos. The Google smartphone also has speech command capabilities. It can transfer voice to text and email and can also search via speech.

    Multitasking
    The Google Nexus One has greater multitasking abilities, making it easy to go between programs and perform multiple activities. In comparison the iPhone is said to be limited to playing music whilst being online or sending a message.

The screen is gorgeous, tilting is responsive, and the thing is super thin. Still, if you’ve used the iPhone before, and you can see the two devices side-by-side here, there’s not a lot of surprises here so far. Here are some initial thoughts on the iPad:

    • It’s not light. It feels pretty weighty in your hand.
    • The screen is stunning, and it’s 1024 x 768. Feels just like a huge iPhone in your hands.
    • The speed of the CPU is something to be marveled at. It is blazingly fast from what we can tell. Webpages loaded up super fast, and scrolling was without a hiccup. Moving into and out of apps was a breeze. Everything flew.
    • There’s no multitasking at all. It’s a real disappointment. All this power and very little you can do with it at once. No multitasking means no streaming Pandora when you’re working in Pages… you can figure it out. It’s a real setback for this device.
    • The ebook implementation is about as close as you can get to reading without a stack of bound paper in your hand. The visual stuff really helps flesh out the experience. It may be just for show, but it counts here.
    • No camera. None, nada. Zip. No video conferencing here folks. Hell, it doesn’t have an SMS app!
    • It’s running iPhone OS 3.2.
    • The keyboard is good, not great. Not quite as responsive as it looked in the demos.
    • No Flash confirmed. So Hulu is out for you, folks!

    Of course we know Apple’s been working on the next-gen iPhone for ages due to natural product development cycles, and clues in the form of iPhone v4 browser identity codes have even turned up in some Web site logs. But apart from lots of speculation, we’ve heard nothing concrete–as we’d actually expect from Apple’s rigid security practices.

    And now here’s the Korea Times mentioning apparent talks between Apple and local cell-phone provider and exclusive Apple vendor, KT. “Still there are some 3G iPhone stocks. But KT and Apple have reached a broad consensus to introduce the advance models as early as possible” are the words attributed to an anonymous KT executive.

    That’s possibly believable, even if talking about this stuff is likely to be breaching many an Apple NDA. And yet it tells us nothing about the new phone itself. But hang on: The same exec also told the newspaper that there’ll be OLED screens, live video chat powers (implying a long-awaited front Webcam), and maybe even a removable battery. There was also talk about dual core processors, better graphics chips for higher resolutions, and better still imagery from the rear-facing cam. And it’s all due April at the earliest–as a test launch to select users, and to the public in June.

    And though some of this is highly plausible, and even agrees with some rumors about OLED we’ve heard before, and recent mention of Apple buying millions of 5-megapixel cameras and Philips LED flash for better iPhone imagery, it all sounds too good to be true.

    According to a AppleInsider report, “Apple has ordered significant amount of LED camera flash components for the year 2010 that could help the next-generation iPhone 4G to produce better image and video recording in low-light situations.

    Philips LEXEON LED flash technology may already have secured the orders for the expected LED camera flash components for the iPhone 4G, the report says.

    This report is also inline with the earlier reports where OmniVision secured the orders from Apple to supply 5 megapixel CMOS image sensors for the next Gen iPhone 4G.

    As an iPhone owner, you would know how frustrating it is to take photos in the dim-light with your iPhone.

    Having competitors like Motorola DROID, HD2 and Nexus One from Google, featuring a high Res camera with LED flash in the upcoming iPhone 4G is what situation requires from Apple if they want to see their baby’s growth in future.

    The next generation iPhone is expected to be unveiled at the annual WWDC 2010 conference featuring iPhone OS 4.0.

    Some of this is bound to be in the next iPhone–but all of it? That goes against Apple’s careful incremental update strategy for the device so far. And though moving the iPhone forward to an April launch from its more normal late-Spring cycle would certainly help Apple steal some of the thunder from the Nexus One and other upcoming Android phones, isn’t it a bit close to the purported launch date of the iSlate?

    Confused ? Skeptical ? But admit it – this is very intriguing.

    The video is quickly becoming viral, with this YouTube copy garnering more than 151,000 views in just over 12 hours. As for Larry, BuzzFeed might be impressed, but he’s just one in a million singing guys straight out of Five Points to me. Catchy or not, “Pants on the Ground” is no “MARTA Bus.”

    That’s why I freaked when I saw the $20 FlipSync cable on display at the Scosche booth at CES. They boiled Apple’s cable down to a little keychain, placing an iPod connector on one end, and on the other end, a USB plug whittled down to just the pins. No, it’s not glamorous, but as someone who’s constantly keeping track of iPod cables, this thing looks like a godsend.

    The FlipSync is due out in the first quarter, along with a smartphone version that doles out both mini and micro USB. To see more iPod accessories Scosche has on the horizon, head on through the rest of this post.

    The Scosche tapSTICK gives the third-generation Apple iPod Shuffle some badly needed buttons. Current models exist in either black or white, but a new transparent version is in the works that allows the Shuffle’s color to show through.

    The clear version of the Scosche tapSTICK is due out Q1 of 2010 for approximately $29.

    The Scosche reviveLITE II improves on the original iPod and iPhone wall charger by moving the built-in dock to the front (from the side) and adding an additional USB port.

    The IDR655m earphones with tapLINE II Remote and mic are compatible with the iPhone and latest generation iPods. Unlike Apple’s headphone line, the IDR655m places the remote midway down the cable where the wires split, which some users may find more convenient.

    There’s also a pair of portable desktop speakers, a category that tends to get left out in the cold when it comes to fashion-forward design.

    However, wooden headphones and earbuds are nothing new. Earbuds and cases will be available at prices ranging from $9.99 to $29.99 in the second quarter of this year.

Leading things off is the inMotion Compact (iMT320) iPod speaker system, which is a slightly smaller, slightly cheaper followup to the company’s inMotion Classic speaker system, and includes some nifty features like a folding leather-like cover that also doubles as a speaker stand — look for it to be available in February for $80. That’s complemented by the Octane Plus 2.1 Speaker System (pictured after the break), which will also run $80, and three new headphones in the company’s MUZX DNA line that’ll cost just $20 apiece but still promise “a full ranged, balanced sound.”

    Altec Lansing sure came out fighting with it not only debuting a brand new logo, but a bundle of new speakers and several iPod docks that sport the new branding. The most stand-out, by far, are the Expressionist Bass speakers pictured below, which are a full ten inches high and include built-in 4-inch subwoofers and two 1.5-inch drivers apiece. Look for them to set you back $130 when they’re released next month in both black and white versions.

    Unfortunately, we can’t offer any corroboration or dispute to their claimed usefulness since no functional units were on hand. What we can say is that the earpiece that enters your ear canal is quite threatening looking and never really fit us very well — though there will be multiple adapters in the final package. Finally, there’s a cool audio enhancement feature, which collects sound from up to five feet in front of you and amplifies it should you need to focus in a noisy environment. The Spracht Aura EQ is coming out within the first half of the year when you’ll be able to grab one for $79.

The mc-series consists of the hf2, hf3, and hf5, and employs the moving-coil sound tech instead of more expensive balanced armiture hardware. As Etymotic explained, it’s the extra air chamber that makes the moving coil acoustics better than they would normally be.

    We’re not crazy audiophiles, and we can’t really make a realistic judgment in the middle of the Las Vegas Convention Center, but the sound quality was definitely passable. They’ve got a couple of models sporting in-line remote controls for iPhone / iPod touch, and you can score ‘em in any color to match your iPod nano. Check the neon ‘buds out in our gallery below.
