US copyright law was modified on Monday (July 26,2010) to make it legal to hack smartphones such as iPhones to switch telecom service providers or install applications without Apple’s approval.

The decision to allow the practice commonly known as “jailbreaking” is one of a handful of new exemptions from a 1998 federal law that prohibits people from bypassing technical measures that companies put on their products to prevent unauthorized use of copyright-protected material. The Library of Congress, which oversees the Copyright Office, reviews and authorizes exemptions every three years to ensure that the law does not prevent certain non-infringing uses of copyright-protected works.

For iPhone jailbreakers, the new rules effectively legitimize a practice that has been operating in a legal gray area by exempting it from liability. Apple claims that jailbreaking is an unauthorized modification of its software.

Mario Ciabarra, founder of Rock Your Phone, which calls itself an “independent iPhone application store,” said the rules mark the first step toward opening the iPhone app market to competition and removing the “handcuffs” that Apple imposes on developers that want to reach users of the wildly popular device.

Unless users unlock their handsets, they can only download apps from Apple’s iTunes store. Software developers must get such apps pre-approved by Apple, which sometimes demands changes or rejects programs for what developers say are vague reasons.

Ciabarra noted that Google Inc. has taken a different approach with its Android operating system, which is emerging as the biggest competitor to the iPhone. Google allows users of Android phones to download applications from outside the Android Market. Although Apple has never prosecuted anyone for jailbreaking, it does use software upgrades to disable jailbroken phones, and the new government rules won’t put a stop to that. That means owners of such phones might not be able to take advantage of software improvements, and they still run the risk of voiding their warranty.

Apple spokesman Natalie Kerris said Monday that the company is concerned about jailbreaking because the practice can make an iPhone unstable and unreliable.

“Apple’s goal has always been to ensure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone, and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience,” she said.

In addition to jailbreaking, other exemptions announced Monday would:

- allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.

- allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.

- allow college professors, film students, documentary filmmakers and producers of noncommercial videos to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism or commentary.

- allow computer owners to bypass the need for external security devices called dongles if the dongle no longer works and cannot be replaced.

- allow blind people to break locks on electronic books so that they can use them with read-aloud software and similar aides.

Although the jailbreaking exemption is new, all the others are similar to the last set of exemptions, which were announced in November 2006. The new rules take effect Tuesday and are expected to last a few years.

The exceptions are a big victory for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which had urged the Library of Congress to legalize several of them, including the two regarding cell phones.

Jennifer Stisa Granick, EFF’s civil liberties director, said the rules are based on an important principle: Consumers should be allowed to use and modify the devices that they purchase the way they want. “If you bought it, you own it,” she said.

It is reported that “a software glitch has misrepresented the phone’s actual signal strength for years”.

A N.Y. based Web designer uses Apple’s wildly popular smartphone for personal and business calls, Web research and e-mail. So when he lost a design project because his iPhone never rang, he was understandably irked. Calls about the project repeatedly went to voicemail, leading the prospective client to believe that this user was too busy or, worse, unreliable. And it wasn’t the first time AT&T dropped the ball — er, call.

“I’ve dropped countless calls while talking to clients,” says this individual, who admits — for better or worse — he’s an Apple junkie and has no plans to abandon his trusty, if sometimes unreliable, iPhone.

Then there’s a CEO and of a Public Relations firm in Los Angeles. She regularly uses her iPhone to call national television producers, new business prospects and retail clients. One recent call with an important client was dropped — at a very inopportune time. “Fortunately, the company still placed the order… but it didn’t look good dropping the call in the middle of contract negotiations”.

Poor reception and dropped calls have become a way of life for many AT&T Wireless customers since the iPhone was first introduced in 2007, and the new iPhone 4 — which, by Apple’s own admission, may drop calls if users hold the phone a certain way — has sparked a litany of complaints online. AT&T and Apple were dealt another public relations blow recently, after revealing that a software glitch has misrepresented the phone’s actual signal strength for years.

Sure, it’s annoying when calls get dropped, and it’s a reality for almost every cell phone and carrier at some point. But with millions of power users who live their digital lives on Apple’s superphone, and in part because it does so many other things so well, poor call quality has become a well-known Achilles’ Heel of the iPhone — especially frustrating for entrepreneurs and other business types who use it as their mobile offices.

A managing partner at Public Relations firm in Philadelphia, says AT&T’s dropped calls are a frequent frustration and make it difficult to develop “a new client relationship based on reliability.”
An expert in technology product management at a well known marketing firm, tries not to get worked up when his calls fail. “The client dropped the call, we all sighed heavily, he called me back, we concluded our business,” he says. This sequence has become somewhat of a tradition for this individual and his colleagues, who have experienced many dropped calls over the years.

Instead of shouting expletives at AT&T, an “insider” in Oregon (he asked to remain anonymous) is making light of the reception issues. On the heels of the viral success of @BPGlobalPR — a fake Twitter feed purporting to be from BP’s public relations department — the longtime iPhone user set off to create a snarky AT&T analog while he was on hold to pre-order an iPhone 4.
This insider says, “While AT&T’s servers were crashing left and right, I thought, ‘Huh, I’ve got a few minutes. Now would be a good time to “join” AT&T’s PR team.’ @ATT_Wireless_PR went live that afternoon in an attempt to give humorous voice to the frustrations that iPhone, and AT&T users in general, have felt for years,”.
But the mystery Twitterer insists he’s not trying to take down the company.

“The point is that in this brave new age of social media, even giant multinational telecoms like AT&T can be given a successful nipple-tweaking by one guy with a computer and too much free time,” he says. “Will this change the way AT&T does business? Almost certainly not. Will a few people have a laugh at AT&T’s expense? They already have.”

But these gripes aren’t limited to reception issues, nor are those of other AT&T users. A founder of an athletic footwear maker has jumbled contacts on his shiny new iPhone 4. For example, when his mom calls, it shows up as a different name and number. This user thinks it might be a “linking” problem that is mixing up his e-mail and telephone contacts. He hasn’t called AT&T to discuss the problem or find out how widespread it is, because he fears he’ll be put on hold for 30 minutes — and he has a business to run.

In fact, based on his own experience, this individual says it’s probably not a good decision for people to invest in AT&T’s iPhone 4 for business use, because first-generation models tend to have bugs, whether with reception, a wonky camera or a yellow bar on the LCD screen. “For the true mavens, get it,” he says. “For everyone else, wait it out.”
On Friday, Apple fessed up to the signal-bar glitch.

“Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong,” Apple said in a statement. How wrong? For many users, the iPhone adds two more signal bars than it should.

The statement went on to say that Apple is adopting an AT&T formula for calculating signal bars to accurately display signal strength in a given area — which, of course, doesn’t exactly solve the problem of poor reception, just how that poor reception is displayed. Apple will also issue a free software update in the coming weeks to distribute the correct formula to the millions of iPhone 4s that have been purchased since its release on June 24. Owners of iPhone 3GS and 3G will also get the update, since the erroneous formula is present in those versions as well.

Spokespeople for AT&T declined to comment on the issue and deferred to Apple representatives, who did not respond to questions via phone or e-mail. But the companies appear to be working together to address the reception issue.

And that’s good news for many businesses that have made — or want to make — the switch from BlackBerry to iPhone. AT&T says 40 percent of its sales this year have been to business customers, suggesting that iPhones are encroaching on corporate territory once owned by Research In Motion’s BlackBerry.

Since its debut in 2007, the iPhone typically has not been supported in corporate environments. IT departments had been reluctant to fix the expensive device, which was seen more as a toy than a business tool and didn’t offer much privacy protection. BlackBerries, although not as consumer-friendly, have always been durable, reliable and efficient — if not a little less fun and glamorous. But in January, Apple announced that 70 percent of Fortune 100 companies were testing or deploying iPhones. And the Cupertino, Calif.-based company is improving its privacy, devising new business-friendly apps, and offers more than just e-mail. Apple will likely welcome even more fans — business and otherwise — once it teams up with Verizon, a long-anticipated partnership expected to debut in 2011.

In the meantime, most iPhone users appear to be standing by their devices, albeit sometimes begrudgingly. A loyal iPhone user says, “That’s what we do, we sigh and accept it and move on.”

It’s time to update the entries in your browser’s links toolbar. But with recent estimates putting the size of the internet at well more than 100 million distinct websites, it’s getting harder and harder to get a handle on all the great stuff that’s out there. That’s why we’ve compiled this list. And unlike some lists you may have seen, which try to name the very “best” websites, but end up just telling you a lot of stuff you already know, we’ve chosen instead to highlight 50 of our favorite sites that fly under most people’s radar. Think of it as the Maximum PC blog roll (remember those?). These sites represent great alternatives to popular web destinations like YouTube and Hulu, and include useful references, powerful web apps, and the unknown blogs you must absolutely bookmark.

You might have heard of some of these sites, but we’ll bet you haven’t heard of all them. Read on and find out. You won’t be disappointed.

Demoscene.tv

If you’re any kind of nerd at all, you probably know about the demoscene, where talented programmers create complex videos rendered in real-time, stored in incredibly small files. If you’re not familiar, you should make yourself acquainted with the scene, and all of the trippy, procedurally-generated content it has to offer. And hey, it’s not like you’re going to hit your bandwidth cap watching demos.

But what if you just want to see what all the fuss is about without actually downloading and running an executable? That’s where demoscene.tv comes in. Think of it as YouTube for the scene, letting you watch demos in HD on the web. And if you like what you see, the full demo executable is just a click away.

14th Century cartographers would be right about Google Earth – its world is pretty flat. Despite high-resolution satellite imagery that lets you zoom in on your neighbor’s skylight, buildings are still part of one big flat surface. That’s where you come in.
The Best Place to Upload Your Videos

We’ve given up all hope for Youtube. Vimeo – founded by the creators of CollegeHumor – is the premium cable equivalent of internet video. The simple upload interface, relatively quick processing times, and elegant video interface make this our preferred video hosting site. The moderated channels have high-quality content (there’s even a channel for anaglyph 3D video!), and the community has more than a single-digit lexicon.

Craiglist Gets Unstuck from 1995

Craigslist is undoubtedly the best place online marketplace to barter or trade goods, but its interface and navigation system leaves much to be desired. But since all of its content can be read through RSS feeds, you’re not forced to actually use the Craigslist site. Craiglook is a mash-up of Craiglist feeds (read through Yahoo Pipes) and Google Maps. Its location radius-based search is the site’s most useful feature, and its content is always up to date with the main Craigslist directory.

Collaborate in Real-Time without the Wave

Yes, we know everyone is excited about the potential of Google Wave as an end-all solution for real-time project collaboration. But in its Beta state, Wave is too buggy and slow to earn our recommendation. Drop.io takes a simpler approach to real-time collaboration: users share online “drop” repositories which host documents and images. We dig that Drop.io doesn’t require complicated user accounts or unnecessary social networking elements. Yahoo apparently feels the same way, and has pre-installed Drop.io’s Attach Large Files feature into every Yahoo mail account.

A Social Music Platform to Replace iTunes

Spotify is a new music service that hopes to streamline the way we both stream and purchase new music. The company was launched with the blessing of several major labels, in a refreshingly forward-thinking move on the part of the music industry. Because of this, Spotify is able to stream full, high-quality tracks from these labels without fear of retribution. Our favorite feature is the ability to create and save playlists for later. This really adds to the illusion that you now have an unlimited music library on your computer. While Spotify is not yet available for US residents, we await its stateside debut with bated breath.

Respect Your Gadget’s Ancestors

This darling Tumblr blog preaches the kind of nostalgia that techies can really appreciate. Author Anna Jane Grossman recounts the simpler days of pay phones, Polaroid photos, and pocket calculators. If you’re ever suffering from shiny gadget overload, take a breath and calm yourself in the Obsolete blog’s welcoming analog arms.

Tech News from a Different Perspective

Wired UK’s website is a great example of an international publication that puts out fine content that’s distinct from its US counterpart. Sure, some news and blog posts cover the same topics as the stateside edition, but the perspective is just as elucidating and fresh. Plus, it’s the only place you’ll find the musings of acclaimed futurist and comic book writer Warren Ellis.

Advanced Crafting for Hobbyists

Like to get your hands dirty? Makezine’s blog is a treasure trove of links to geeky craft projects found all over the web. From circuit bending tutorials to D-I-Y robots, you’ll find all sorts of nifty projects that’ll get your inner inventor stirring. And even if you’re not the hacking type, the linked projects are a joy to read.

Find any PDF Reference Manual

This search engine is dedicated to indexing PDF files scattered all over the web. It’s extremely useful for finding technical manuals that you might have thrown away without having to dig through the original manufacturer’s website. It’s also great for finding ebooks and obscure academic documents.

Because Not Everyone Uses Helvetica

In the days of yore, font-recognition software was expensive and didn’t work particularly well. Lucky for us, what once cost a lot of money is now available free on the web. Point your browser to WhatTheFont, upload an image featuring the font in question, and the service will give you a list of matching fonts, usually including some free options. For bonus points, font nerds can test their knowledge by trying to identify the difference between Arial and Helvetica in common logos.

Get Your Sci-Fi Short Story Fix

If you’re a science fiction and fantasy aficionado, this site is for you. A free membership to this publisher’s site gets you access to exclusive ebooks, and casual browsers can still dive into a wealth of short stories, comics, art, and its delightful blog.

Your iPhone provides access to email, Visual Voicemail, Web browsing and other applications that can use a significant amount of data. It’s no surprise that you might find yourself using more data than you thought.

The good news is that now, when you’re traveling outside the U.S., you can save money on your international data usage by signing up for one of AT&T’s newly created Data Global Plans with low rates in more than 90 countries.

iPhone and iPod Touch users can see videos, including a 360-degree colorizer of the Prius. Within the next couple of months, Toyota will extend this rich media feature to other models – and also to other mobile phone models. Right now, the videos are limited to the Prius, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Promise me that if you go car shopping on our mobile phone that you’ll also stay in touch with the latest news about hybrid cars, electric cars, hydrogen and fuel cell cars, and other alternative fuel vehicles, right here, from your Green Car Examiner.

The Toyota mobile phone website app was created by iCrossing, a digital marketing company.

With World Call you simply enter in the phone number you are calling and then World Call calls both you and the person you are trying to call at the same time! So no one actually made the international call. No VOiP apps in the app store has any feature like this.

Call History

Call History tells users exactly how much each call cost, so they can easily track how much they are spending.

Create Virtual Numbers

Do you have a family member in Argentina or a business colleague in England? With the virtual number feature you can create a local phone number in countries all across the world that will ring directly to your phone.

So now your family in Argentina can dial a local Argentina phone number and connect directly to your cell phone anywhere in the world. And your family in Argentina will only pay for a local phone call.

Rate Finder

Are you unsure how much it will cost you to call your brother in France? Simply go to the rate finder and quickly the look up the cost.

Recharge Notification

Lets you know when your balance is low. So your balance never runs out during the middle of a call.

Multifl0w is a cool app which bridges the gap that Backgrounder has, that when your apps are running on Background you need either follow the backgrounder badges and also scroll pages to switch between opned apps, which is quite frustrating(atleast for me ). Multiflow is a multitasking interface which displays applications snapshot that are currently running on Background and allows you to scroll left and right to switch between apps that are currrently running.

Multifl0w uses backgrounder as a back-end,all it provides a cool interface to switch between opened apps. Switching between apps is quite fast and I didn’t faced any issues with springboard crashing or so. You wont see any icons on springboard of Multiflow, You can enable it by double tapping the home button.

Coming very soon to the App Store, LittleSnapper for the iPhone will tantalize you with it’s rich feature set and high utility.

Realmac Software was kind enough to give us an exclusive preview of LittleSnapper for the iPhone. You won’t find this anywhere else, so please enjoy.

What Does it Do?

So what does this fantastic app do? First and foremost, it easily supplants the supplied iPhone camera app by providing a pretty broad set of features. Let’s iterate through the list:

A fantastic interface with a very simple mechanism to scroll through LittleSnapper’s feature areas.

Take photos with the ability to name, rate, tag and share the photo via the QuickSnapper service. You can optionally store the photos locally within the Photos app too.

Share photos via your iPhone Twitter client, including support for Tweetie, Twitterific and TwitterFon.

Like the desktop version of LittleSnapper, you can also capture an entire web-page for future editing.

Show Me the Money

What does it look like? Let’s take a look.

LittleSnapper Home

The five main options here are:

Photo Albums – Takes you to the iPhone Photos App. What is unique is that once you select a Photo, you then return to LittleSnapper where you can add Photo details (see below).

Snap Webpage – Opens a built-in browser to capture a web page. Currently, due to WebKit limitations, only the screen is captured, as opposed to the full web page.

Take A Photo – Self explanatory.

Accounts – Where you can add/edit your QuickSnapper account(s).

QuickSnapper – Closes the LittleSnapper App and opens Safari, taking you to the QuickSnapper home page.

Options Aplenty

Once you select the Take A Photo option, and after you have taken the photo, the following screen displays:

LittleSnapper Photo Details

From this screen, you can do the following:

Give the photo a title

Rate the photo – up to five stars

Provide a description

Tag the photo

Specify the type of Photo – iPhone, Screenshot, Websnap and more

Tag It Baby!

For tagging photos, the UI is quite attractive. Let’s take a look at what you can do.

LittleSnapper Tag Details

If you already have tags from your QuickSnapper account, then they are displayed above the image and you can just press the tag to add it. Otherwise, type a new tag for this particular photo.

The Real Deal: Snapping Web Pages

Probably the key feature of the app, you can capture web pages with just a simple press of the screen. These pages are saved as screenshots for later editing.

LittleSnapper Web Page Capture

Ok I’m Sold, What’s the Damage?

When LittleSnapper arrives in the App Store (hopefully in the next week), it will come at a modest price of $2.99. For the rich functionality that you receive, this is quite a bargain. Although there are other photo-capturing apps within the App Store, for shear value, this is the app to get.

I Want More

For an initial offering, LittleSnapper for the iPhone is very impressive. However, I would love to see the ability to sync my captured images over Wi-Fi to the desktop version of LittleSnapper. Currently, I have to share the image to my QuickSnapper account, download the image to my desktop and then add it to my LittleSnapper library.

Maybe I missed this, but on the desktop version of LittleSnapper, you can share images to QuickSnapper, Flickr and an FTP site. With the version for the iPhone, you can only share images to your QuickSnapper account.

Still, these two nits are feature requests and I am sure the folks at Realmac Software are already hard at work on them (and other delightful features) for the next release. Until then, I’ll be pleasantly using LittleSnapper for my photo-taking needs…

Click Download/Buy Now button to get Littlesnapper!

If you scan the list of top iPhone apps, you might be forgiven for thinking that the device, like adolescence, is mostly for playing videogames, making rude noises and connecting to Facebook.

However, a more thorough examination of the digital delectables on offer in the app store will reveal that, far from being merely a plaything that receives phone calls — as long as you don’t live in rural Montana or my neighborhood — the iPhone is actually a hard-core survival tool.

Imagine that you’re stranded on your stock desert island, charged with surviving until the Globetrotters, your superiors at FedEx or the Smoke Monster finds you. And suppose that, for some reason, this island is equipped with a USB port for charging.

Well, then, as long as you have your trusty iPhone, you needn’t fear hypothermia, malaria or starvation. You just need the right apps. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Flashlights

I’ve used lots of electronic devices as flashlights: Nintendo DS, PalmPilot and once, in the ’80s, I tried using one of those LED football games. The iPhone, however, is my first device — outside of an actual flashlight — with a dedicated flashlight mode. (Inside a flashlight, it’s too dark to read.) There are so many flashlight apps for the iPhone that developers are actually adding features to differentiate their products and earn your precious download. You can buy all sorts of colored disco-strobe flashlight apps, in case you want to travel treacherous pathways at night while listening to “Umbrella.”

Mosquito repellents

Until we reach the day that the iPhone can dispense quinine (second quarter 2012 by most estimates), the only way the gadget can help fend off malaria during your island sojourn is by keeping mosquitoes away. These supposed bug-banning apps emit a high-pitched noise that most people over 40 can’t hear. However, I remain skeptical about whether biting insects of any sort are repelled by high-pitched noises, unless you’re being bothered by the rare-but-majestic Self-Loathing Mosquito.

Hand warmers

There are two different hand-warming apps in the iPhone store, each of which does the same thing: Ask the iPhone’s CPU “What is love?” so that it spins into a Trek-like tizzy of futile calculation, which warms your phone up and makes everyone in your Contacts sweat like a missionary. Almost guaranteed to not cut your iPhone’s life by more than 50 percent! I can attest that the TomTom GPS app does the same thing, so if you feel like spending 60 bucks on a hand warmer, you can.

Army survival guides

I assume there’s a public domain Army survival guide out there, because there are at least three apps available that reprint it in electronic form. Not only will this guide tell you how to build shelter and find fresh water, it reveals which kind of face camouflage is best in areas with lots of coniferous trees. (Slash patterns, duh.) On the plus side, it helps keep you alive, but it also might make you wish you were marooned someplace more exciting. As public domain works go, Pride and Prejudice is less likely to help you survive a snake bite, but the Army survival guide lacks that dreamy Mr. Darcy. It’s really a personal choice.

Hunting calls

You’re warm, well-lit, protected from mosquitoes and adequately camouflaged. At some point, you’re probably going to want to eat. And you’re going to want to eat meat, because seriously nobody wants to hear that you ate grubs to survive. That’s like knowing that astronauts wear diapers. So you’re going to want one of these apps that makes noises that attract animals. One of the more expensive ones can attract — among other animals — coyotes and raccoons. I assume that’s not so you can eat them, but rather so you can summon them both and watch them fight.

(button above opens iTunes)

TickDoctor: Tick Identification Atlas

This app helps you identify any tick you come across, with detailed photos of them, both in their normal and their glistening, blood-engorged states. This will have obvious wilderness survival benefits if you accidentally eat something poisonous and need to induce vomiting.

MotionX was leading the *outdoor* GPS apps sales in the past. They had great momentum with their app called MotionX GPS for outdoor sporting people, which loved their offering in the App Store and then they surprisingly released MotionX GPS Drive. Competing directly with big names like TomTom, Sygic, Navigon, iGO My way and Ndrive. They undercut the current model of paying one time for the maps of your choice, to the model of 30 day for free maps and paying for every month you need it with an “In App Purchase”, all to be downloaded and cached over 3G.

Now since some time has passed, MotionX did not stood still and developed the 2.0 edition which has the following great improvements.

MotionX made a cheap entry price in the store for only 2.99 dollars to begin with. The long term cost of this app is higher than the other competitors if you buy their maps every month, but for the people who once in a while need Turn-by-Turn Voice guided GPS Navigation this is the app to save money with. And they prove that there is a public for this model, they are leading the App Store since they have entered with MotionX GPS Drive, in the navigation section.

● New Night Mode maps! Option to use automatically based on time of day.
● Faster re-routing detection when you go off-course.
● Simulation mode added to the core application.
● Choose between iPod music fading or p…ausing during voice instructions.
● New re-route button in Get Directions mode makes manual re-routing fast & easy.
● Improved interface for entering Canadian addresses.
● Improved airport search.
● Gas station search improved.
● New map data available; clear your cache (Setup page) to utilize.
● Additional voice prompts added and timing of prompts has been improved.
● Initiate routing without a GPS signal.
● Various optimizations and bug fixes.

It seems that augmented reality (the overlaying of digital data on the real world) is where we’re headed. A buzz technology right now, augmented reality apps are quickly gaining momentum on the iPhone. So we bring you ten AR apps for the iPhone that vary from functional, to educational, to just plain fun.

1. Le Bar Guide

Although the wisdom of getting drunk people to wave their iPhones around on today’s mean streets is questionable, if you drink responsibly, as this Stella Artois-backed app urges you to, this could be a handy tool. As with similar location-based AR apps, Le Bar (that’s French for bar, by the way) Guide will assist you in finding the nearest watering hole, give you ratings and then even point you to a taxi within stumbling distance. It’s accurate to 20 feet, which is a coincidence, as that’s about our level of accuracy after three pints of the French stuff.

2. WorkSnug

Another corporate-backed app, this time by Plantronics, is WorkSnug, an iPhone app that finds digital nomads a place to lay their weary laptop. It identifies Wi-Fi hotspots and potential workplaces – from coffee shops to professional rent-a-desk office spaces – with user reviews encompassing power provision, atmosphere, noise levels and even the quality of the coffee. Although currently only available for London, versions for San Francisco, New York, Berlin, Madrid are due soon.

3. Pocket Universe: Virtual Sky Astronomy

This star map app will spell out the stars, planets and constellations for you. Needing no connectivity, this clever app contains data on 10,000 stars, 88 constellations and lunar phases, while the “tonight’s sky” feature shows meteor showers and visible planets based on your location. Just hold your iPhone skywards on a bright night and before you can say “Hubble telescope” you’ll be looking at Uranus.

4. DishPointer

Staying on the celestial theme, what started out as a clever Google Maps() mashup has been turned into an iPhone app, and is within days of launching for Android() handsets too. The mobile version of DishPointer is designed for satellite installers or mobile broadcasters to hold their phones up to the sky and get a virtual overlay of their nearest satellites to know which way to point the darn dish. If you aren’t employed in such a field, yet you have this on your phone, then your nerd-score just went through the stratosphere. Way to go, cable guy.

5. AugMeasure

Finally an iPhone app your dad can get excited about. Augmented reality measuring arrives with AugMeasure which lets you gauge short distances using on your iPhone’s camera. AugMeasure displays distances (up to 30 centimeters or 12 inches) on the screen overlaid onto the live image which will change as you move the phone. While the results might not be precise enough for that intricate woodworking project you’ve got going on in the basement, for those quick, “No, it’s definitely longer than 6 inches” moments, it’s a must.

6. Virtual Graffiti

If the militant grammar nerd within knows that the sign for “Buddys Bar” needs an apostrophe, then Virtual Graffiti can help. Snap an image, add your witticism, embellishment or “tag”, then, once uploaded, your artistic addition to the world can be browsed on a location basis thanks to the Google Maps integration. All the fun of tagging, none of the embarrassment of getting caught with a spray can in your hot little old-enough-to-know-better hand.

7. Theodolite

If you’re the type that likes to know what axis is bisecting your Northerly inclination and at what altitude, then chances are you already have an actual theodolite. If you don’t and that sentence gave you chills (in a good way) then you’re 99 cents away from topographical heaven. As well as offering all that a theolodite might, but in a decidedly more portable package, this app overlays such data over your camera’s image and even lets you snap the odd screenshot for posterity.

8. Car Finder

We’re sure you have no use for this one yourself, but if you know anyone who might have difficulty finding their way back to the car in those huge parking lots, then the Car Finder app is a good suggestion. Once the car’s location is set, the app creates a visible marker showing the car, its distance away and the direction in which to head. There are other non-AR apps which offer this kind of tool, but we think seeing it on a real-life display will make locating that pesky Pontiac a piece of cake.

9. Firefighter 360

Catering to both pyromaniacs and Backdraft fantasists, Firefighter 360 will set your immediate location on fire, requiring you, as heroic fireperson, to get out the hose, douse some flames and save some passers-by. As far as iPhone gaming goes, it’s arguably not a high point. The sound effects are crude and the graphics cartoonish. But it’s an interesting application of AR that makes us excited about the next wave of AR games. Did we mention you get to play a fireperson?

Want to shoot people in the face with a laser? Yep, there’s an app for that. iPew could easily also be named iPuerile, as it really is that dumb. But, sometimes it’s the simple things in life (kicking leaves, vanilla ice cream, swapping around the keys on a colleague’s keyboard when they’re on vacation) that offer the most pleasure – at least on a short term basis. iPew offers you a choice of weapons and provides gratifying noises as you get someone in your virtual sights and blast them away. Recommended for board meetings, long commutes and those cozy nights in with the in-laws.

Twydget is another, but the best Twitter Cydget client that allows you to quickly and easily post a status update, view your friends status updates, @replies, and many-more cool features like you can changed the view a Standard view (which is same as what you see on your browser on PC/MAC) and Mobile view which is a mobile version.
Another cool but needed feature is the ability for Twydget to instantly store your tweets temporarily so that you don’t lose an important characters. Twydget also includes a LIVE 140 character counter which is really cool. Cut copypaste feature also works here, you can retweet with this, which is amazing.

Actually Twitter is ported into cydget platform in form of Twydget,i.e when you open twitter.com from your mobile Safari on your iPhone/iTouch, the same experience you will get with Twydget.

The state of each tweet is automatically logged (locally) and restored if the device goes back to sleep.

Twydget is available on cydia for free.

Also, Twydget runs almost entirely client-side (right from your device), instead of relying on third party web servers that may not always be around and available. Not to mention that they might be storing your user-name and password. By default, Twydget allows you to configure your user-name and password on the fly, right from the lockscreen. Your username and password are temporarily stored locally on your device, however, a simple respring or reboot will clear these settings.

You can permanently set the username and password, and even show your lock background image by editing (via SSH/FTP or with iPhoneBrowser) /System/Library/LockCydgets/Twydget.cydget/settings.js

Here are the steps to configure Settings.js with iPhoneBrowser:

Note: Before following these steps make sure you’ve iPhoneBrowser installed on your PC to access iPhone’s files, you can also use Diskaid to access iPhone’s files.

Plug your iPhone and launch iPhoneBrowser (those who are upgraded to 3.1.2 and jailbreaked with backra1n, you need to install afc2add from cydia to make iPhonebrowser work)

Now on left-column of iPhoneBrowser you will see list of folders; click on System>Library>LockCydgets>Twdget.Cydget folder.

Once you clicked into Twdget.Cydget folder, you will see Settings.js on right side., Right click on it and choose Save as option, and save it on desktop or wherever you want, just remember where you saved it.

Now open Settings.js in Notepad, once opened you will see:

var username = “”;
var password = “”;

Inside quotes your username and password in corresponding fields. for example if your username is torqueabhi and pasword is xxxxx then you should put:

var username = “torqueabhi”;
var password = “xxxxxx”;

Now save and close the file.

Now goto iPhoneBrowser and replace the existing Settings.js file with the one on which you’ve just made the changes, you can do this by doing right click on Settings.js file on iPhoneBrowser and choosing the replace option.

Unplug your phone and respring it, Your username and password is permanently saved.

Mercedes-Benz has embraced another branch of high-tech: The iPhone. On Oct 5, 2009 it launched an iPhone app…but it’s not quite what you might think.

Because what might one expect a Merc iPhone app to do? Remote-unlock the car over Wi-fi? Control your in-car nav-system or stereo? Both would be kinda sweet–but no: Mercedes’ new iPhone app helps you to pay for the car in the first place. It integrates with Mercedes’ own financing scheme (at MercedesBenzFinancial.com) and makes paying for your luxury vehicle into a modern and convenient experience.

Or so Mercedes is spinning it. “Personalized and convenient account management” is how the app’s described, and it’s mercifully free from iTunes. It’ll let Merc finance customers keep track of their account balance, request payoff information and even make payments–while on the go. If you’re not currently a Merc owner, busy paying off your car loan from the comfort of your sofa, the app lets you know where the nearest Mercedes-Benz dealership is, speak to customer services, and check out if Merc’s financial package is attractive enough to temp you into buying a vehicle.

It’s slightly odd, if you think about it. But Mercedes’ Fiancial VP Franz Reiner explains why the app exists by noting “we recognize the need for multiple communication channels in today’s mobile environment.” Basically Mercedes has realized that the smartphone is perniciously penetrating many different corners of our modern lifestyle, and someone in the company has calculated there’s a benefit in making the financing system accessible through the iPhone. Maybe it’ll result in fewer late payments–particularly if the app’s smart enough to make a push message alert when it’s the relevant time (though there’s nothing in the PR to suggest this).

What this also is is a sign that we’re going to see more dedicated, specialized apps arriving from surprising vendors over time, as the companies realize that with a dedicated iPhone app they’ve got a unique personal comms channel to millions of customers.

While some of the limelight has swung away from fuel cells, Mercedes is still chasing the technology and has just announced a new milestone: It’s F-Cell is the first series-produced vehicle that’s hydrogen powered.

This is the first time Mercedes has moved beyond a concept car into a “proof of concept” car with the tech, and it’s integrated the new fuel and drive-train into a B-Class car. The combination of an in-production chassis and the newly-polished engine means that the car is actually being produced in sample quantities late in 2009, and a short-run production will result in 200 cars in early 2010, which will be sold to customers in the U.S. and Europe. While that’s not mass-production by any means, it’s unquestionably a significant step in getting road-going fuel-cell cars into the public’s hands.

Unfortunately, most of the world still lacks any hydrogen fueling infrastructure, so unless you live along Norway’s hydrogen highway or in Iceland (aka “Energy Island”) you probably won’t have much use for this vehicle. Which is a shame, here’s why: Including the F-Cell engine into the B-Class results in a car that has the same interior space and trunk capacity as a traditional gasoline-powered version, and hasn’t compromised Mercedes’ famous high build-quality. This has been done by squeezing many of the components into a sandwich layer in the floor of the car, which places them out of the way and increases the safety aspects of the design–Mercedes has undertaken 30 extra crash tests on top of the normal certification ones, and optimized the safety of the new design as a result.

And how does it perform? Pretty impressive–it does deliver much of the promise of hydrogen-powered electric cars. It’s got a Li-ion battery to boost power and store energy from regenerative braking, a 100kW electric motor with 290Nm torque that can push the car up to 105mph. It does all this with zero CO2 output and, in the strange back-to-front fuel equivalence calculations, it manages 3.3 liters diesel-equivalent per 100km. It’s got a max range of 240 miles, and can even cope with wintry weather–its can cold-start at -25ºC.

Mercedes is going to add “Splitview” screens innovative dashboard display to S-class cars next year, a luxury extra that adds the ability for driver and passenger to view two different things at once on the same dashboard display. One passenger can view the GPS, for example, while the other watches Cannonball Run.

The eight-inch Splitview Command display uses a clever masking system to direct light from alternate pixels in different directions, resulting in a two-at-once viewer where the other screen is completely invisible to one viewer. That will make for much less distraction, ensuring the driver pays attention to the road and navigation cues rather than J.J. McClure in his tricked-out Dodge Tradesman ambulance.

It’s an expensive add-on for a high-end car, of course, but it’s one that begs an obvious question: Why don’t S-class users simply talk to each other? Were I driving, and my passenger was ogling a movie, I’d prefer them to listen over headphones—because Cannonball Run isn’t all that funny the second time around.

An anonymous reader writes “Many game developers don’t think of the iPhone as being a system which has extensive game piracy. But recent comments by developers and analysts have shown otherwise, and Gamasutra speaks to multiple parties to evaluate the size of the problem and whether there’s anything that can be done about it. Quoting: ‘Greg Yardley confirms that getting ripped off by pirates is the rule rather than the exception. Yardley is co-founder and CEO of Manhattan-based Pinch Media, a company that provides analytic software for iPhone games. … “What we’ve determined is that over 60% of iPhone applications have definitively been pirated based on our checks,” he reveals, “and the number is probably higher than that.” While it’s impossible to estimate how much money developers are losing, it involves more than the price of the game, he says. “What developers lose is not necessarily the sale,” he explains, “because I don’t believe pirates would have bought the game if they hadn’t stolen it. But when there is a back-end infrastructure associated with a game, that is an ongoing incremental cost that becomes a straight loss for the developer.”‘” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

To watch movie on iPhone , you will need to either transfer movies from you DVDs into the format that iPhone accepts, or download them from the internet. Get the lowdown on how to download movies for your Iphone in the rest of this article.

Apple’s integration of the capability to play digital movies is only one of many reasons why this wonderful piece of hardware is creating such a huge interest. In many places, there may well not be enough iPhones available to meet the demand.

Before you can watch movies on your iPhone, you will need to get them on to your computer in a form that the iPhone can use. This is considerably easier with movies you download from the internet, as obviously these are already in the right format. Do not despair, however, if you own a large DVD collection. DVD movies can easily be converted from their native format into mp4, provided you have the right piece of software on your computer.

To watch movie on iPhone from your DVDs, you will need to download some special software. There are many different versions of this software, many of which sell for $50 or not much less. There are some free versions, however, if you do an internet search with “freeware” as part of the search, it will come up with them. This software, known as a “ripper”, will take the movie from your DVD, and store it on your computer in the format you choose. For transfer to iPhone, you will need to use the mp4 format. Once the movie is on your hard drive, it is a simple matter to use iTunes to transfer it to your iPhone.

To watch movie on iPhone if you are going to download them, you will obviously need to be connected to the internet. A super fast broadband connection will obviously make this a lot easier, as movie files are obviously not small. If you have dial up, you can still watch movies on your iPhone, it will just take longer to get them there. The biggest problem with downloading movies from the internet is security. Unless you choose the right type of site, you could be facing virus or spyware problems. The sites to avoid are the illegal P2P sites.

Legitimate download sites will charge you a one off fee at the start, and from then on, you will have unlimited downloads. Assuming the downloaded movie is in mp4 format, it can just be transferred to your iPhone through iTunes, as before. These downloads will work out to be very cheap in the long run, as you keep adding to your collection, with no extra charges. This is the best way to watch movie on iPhone.

When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go, right? What if you’re watching a movie? If you’re at home you can just pause it. But what if you’re at the cinema? What if you miss something important? That’s where RunPee comes in.

Some of you may have heard of, or even used, RunPee.com, a database of the best time to go when nature calls during a movie. The iPhone app works exactly the same way as the website (albeit with a reduced list of movies).

When you open RunPee you are presented with a list of current movies which can be sorted by release date, or by name. At the time of writing, 23 current movies were show, with three of those missing the all important RunPee time (presumably waiting for someone to submit the best times to RunPee). I checked my local cinema listings, to see if all the movies showing were in the RunPee app, and they were, so for me at least, the app covered anything I could have gone to see. Your mileage may vary depending on your region, as well as the amount of movies your local cinema shows.

Selecting the movie you want to know about, the RunPee moments are shown (I chose Angels and Demons as an example). In Angels and Demons there are two moments that are best to go; one at 35 minutes in, and one at 70 minutes. RunPee tells you how long you have before you need to be back (2 minutes and 3 minutes respectively in this case), a quick synopsis of what you will miss, as well as timer button which you should start at the beginning of the movie, so you know how far in you are. In terms of the synopsis, I can see an immediate problem – spoilers. The synopsis isn’t hidden until you need it, so if needed to go, and found the movie you were watching, you already know what you’ll miss.

The interface is clean and easy to use but I think it’s a shame there isn’t a function to search through the entire RunPee database. Also the spoiler problem would probably put me off using it. Furthermore, there is no offline option so you must have network coverage to use the app. If these things were fixed, RunPee could be a great app, but as it is, it’s only marginally useful.

If you want extra sauce on your wings, for instance, you shake the phone like a bottle.

And, for those who find ordering pizza too sober a task, the app comes with a racing game named “Hut Racer.” Pizza Hut hopes the app will appeal to customers who rely on their iPhones, said Brian Niccol, Pizza Hut’s chief marketing officer. “As more of our customers are integrating the iPhone and iPod touch into their everyday lives, Pizza Hut wants to be right there with them,” Niccol said in a statement. “As a longtime category leader in innovation, creating an App Store application is just one more way we are helping customers place orders in a way that best fits their mobile lifestyle.”

Artists Collective, a non-profit California medical marijuana delivery service, is now Twittering out its goods, and all it takes to get high is a doctor’s note. They’ve got everything from brownies to blunts and the delivery is free. Rather than whispering “weed” to passersby, the solicitation is like this:

(Tweet) ArtistsCollectve BB Kush, NY Soma, SD Strom, Forrest G, Green C, Baby Crunch, Spy Diesel, buy 1/4 get gram free. Baked goods, Grams, Joints avail.

Dann Halem, 34, started the project about 22 months ago to raise money for California artists, and it’s entirely legal, under California’s medical marijuana laws. However, the Artists Collective could still be raided at any time by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents. Medical marijuana operations are still technically in violation of federal law, despite being legalized by more than a dozen states.

President Obama said during the election campaign he would limit DEA raids on medical marijuana distributers, but so far Attorney General Eric Holder has stopped short of ordering an all out ban.

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., introduced a bill last month that would allow states to legislate medical marijuana use as they see fit, without federal interference.

Smoking marijuana is known to have an adverse effect on memory and concentration, but now, thanks to a new iPhone application, even the foggiest of users should be able to locate their connection — make that medicinal marijuana provider — with relative ease. Launched by AJNAG (Activists Justifying the Natural Agriculture of Ganja), a Web-based community advocating for medical marijuana, the Cannabis app takes those seeking medicinal marijuana through the entire process of obtaining it. The app is downloadable from Apple’s store for $2.99. “Our goal is to put the power of cannabis change in your pocket while you enjoy the most sticky and potent iPhone application available!” the founders say in a statement on their Web site. Here’s how it works.

The application displays an interactive map dotted with doctors who can prescribe medicinal marijuana treatment for their patients. It also shows — after, presumably, users have procured prescriptions — the medicinal marijuana suppliers within the users’ vicinity. And, what’s more, the application includes a database of lawyers who specialize in marijuana-related cases, in should users encounter skeptical local authorities. To help with grassroots media campaigning, the developers also say they will donate 50 cents for every “Cannabis” purchase to a non-profit reform fund, which they say will be set up once the application reaches 1,000 subscriptions. Just remember — Cannabis only works in states where marijuana has been legalized, so if you’ve scored tickets to a Grateful Dead show in, say, Alabama, don’t expect Cannabis to help you score anything else.

new app is promising to find you something far more controversial: marijuana.

Apple has approved a new $2.99 iPhone app, aptly named Cannabis [iTunes link]. It’s made by the also appropriately-named Ajnag.com. The purpose of the app is to help locate legal medical marijuana in states and locations where it can be found. Will this app lead thousands of iPhone users to cannabis, or is it a tool of a movement in favor of marijuana legalization? The answer, surprisingly, is both:

Click the Join The Movement Button below to Join the movement! Once the next page opens, click the same button again to register.

The ad and the app was removed in late October due to outrage from the blogosphere, Twitter and Facebook.

The iPhone application from Pepsi that claimed to help men “score” with women generated outrage from the blogosphere, Twitter and Facebook.

Called AMP Up Before You Score, the application was launched to help promote the company’s new AMP Energy drink. It’s was to be a “roadmap to success with your favorite kinds of women” that would “change your game and raise your expectations,” Pepsi had promised in the app’s description.

The app broke women into 24 categories, from artists and aspiring actresses to bookworms and businesswomen. Once the user had identified the kind of woman he was trying to score with, he could use the app to “study up quick with a cheatsheet on the stuff she’s into, with lists, links and some surefire opening lines.”

If the guy got lucky, the app let him keep a Brag List, with names, dates and other details. It also encouraged users to “flaunt it,” by sharing their lists with friends via e-mail, Facebook and Twitter.

The new app generated scores of online attacks from blogs, Twitter users and Facebook members.

The popular female-focused blog Jezebel called it “unacceptable and ridiculously offensive.”

On Twitter, adopting the hashtag #pepsifail, hundreds of users protested the new app, some even threatened to boycott the company’s products.

one user tweeted,”Until app removed I’m guessing PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi advising her daughter to avoid boys with iPhones,”

The criticism reached such a pitch that Pepsi tweeted an apology.

The apology said “Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologize if it’s in bad taste & appreciate your feedback. #pepsifail,” it was tweeted from the AMPwhatsnext Twitter account.

Still, the app wasn’t without fans. Even some women tweeted their support.

“I’m very comfortable w/ my “digitalfemmeness”. I think Pepsi’s BEFORE YOU SCORE app is brilliant! Funny! Cute,” wrote one Twitter user. What do you think?
